THE FINAL ASSIGNMENT RESEARCH PAPER

Your Research Paper is both the culmination of and the most important assignment of the semester. Like your annotated bibliography, this is a two-part assignment—I will require you to submit a draft and a final version.

THE FIRST DRAFT DUE DATE: NOVEMBER 16, 2018. Please be sure to upload your document to your Google Drive folder by 5:00pm.

*****WE WILL BE WORKSHOPPING THESE ESSAYS ON NOVEMBER 28, 2018***** GUIDELINES:

• Your first draft should offer a clear sense of your argument, even though it may be incomplete, and a

thesis statement, even if it is tentative.

• In this draft, you should begin discussing your primary sources and begin to include some of your

secondary sources.

• While this is an UNGRADED draft—it will be worth 50 points and is 5% of your final grade—your

writing should be clear and grammatically correct.

• You will receive credit for completing the assignment. Requirements to receive full credit:

o Must be at least 1250 words

o Include at least two secondary sources

THE FINAL DRAFT

DUE DATE: DECEMBER 6, 2018. THIS WILL BE HANDED IN AT THE BEGINNING OF OUR LAST MEETING. THIS IS ONE OF TWO ASSIGNMENTS HANDED IN IN CLASS. FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING THAT IS HOLY, STAPLE THE ESSAY. LENGTH AND FORMAT: 7–9 pages, double-spaced with 1-inch margins. You must not exceed 10 pages. GUIDELINES:

Please make certain you include the following: 1. The proper heading. 2. A title. 3. A proper introduction. 4. A clearly articulated 2-sentence thesis. 5. At least:

– one primary source

– four secondary sources. 6. A proper conclusion. 7. For 3 points extra credit, write the author of City of Bohane on the last line of the last page of your

essay. 8. A works cited page and in-text citations (formatted according to that which is most commonly used

in your intended field).

GRADING RUBRIC

A 180–200 Points

THIS TYPE OF PAPER…

• Introduces issues or ideas not previously discussed in class.

• Always supports claims with evidence from the text.

• Is well-organized, logical, and coherent.

• Uses language with outstanding precision.

• Has few surface errors and follows the formatting guidelines described above.

B 160–179 Points

THIS TYPE OF PAPER…

• Introduces at least one issue or idea not previously discussed in class.

• Usually supports claims with evidence from the text.

• Is, for the most part, well-organized, logical, and coherent but may have some weak spots (occasional gaps in logic, awkward transitions, and other structural inconsistencies).

• Uses language thoughtfully.

• Has some surface errors and follows the formatting guidelines described above.

C 140–159 Points

THIS TYPE OF PAPER…

• Does not introduce any new issues or ideas.

• Rarely supports claims with evidence from the text.

• Has several organizational flaws (several logical inconsistencies and a pronounced lack of structure).

• Uses language problematically or at times carelessly.

• Has several surface errors and fails to follow the formatting guidelines described above.

120–139 Points

THIS TYPE OF PAPER…

• Fails to meet the expectations of a “C” paper.

• Assignment not completed or plagiarized.
