6.3 Project Assignment: Course Project

Getting Started

Well, you have made it to the end of the course... almost. You have one last assignment, your course project, to complete. This course project is your opportunity to distill what you have been studying into the most important principles and practices that can inform your leadership work. It is an opportunity to add tools to your tool kit as well as sharpen tools that you already have.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

· Apply motivational theories to create reward systems.

· Identify leadership actions associated with empowerment.

· Contrast various motivational and reward plans.

Background Information

An old adage states that the only thing remaining constant is change. That idea is certainly true about organizations and the personnel in organizations. People join the organization. People move within the organization. People leave the organization. Many of the organizational behavior themes you have studied in the course can help explain such a movement. After all, organizational behavior reflects why people do what they do and say what they say. Organizations (leaders!) who better understand those dynamics and can attract top talent, advance top talent, and keep top talent will perform better than those organizations (and leaders!) who do not.

Instructions

1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.

2. Review previous reading assignments for this course along with  Implementing Total Rewards Strategies(PDF document) , from SHRM Foundation’s Effective Practice Guidelines Series.

3. Using Video Note, develop a 5 to 7-minute video based upon the following scenario:

a. You and your supervisor are leaving a meeting with the top management team where some questions were raised about why people do the things they do in the organization. You are walking back to your team cubicles. Your supervisor has learned that you are studying organizational leadership. During your walk, she asks you to share some important insights from your study about why people do what they do in organizations.

b. Imagine that it takes you between 5 and 7 minutes to make the walk with your supervisor.

c. For your 5 to 7 minute video, utilize the course material to explain to your supervisor some of the key issues regarding organizational behavior.

i. What are 4 - 5 important things that the leaders should know?

ii. What are 4 - 5 things the leaders should do or change?

1. What would be the expected benefit of making Note: The assignment is not just a set of descriptions and definitions. Rather, demonstrate your ability to analyze the most crucial elements of what we have studied. Presume a conversational style. That is, your supervisor wants to “hear” what you have to say. While you may use notes or bullet points, do not appear to merely be “reading” your response. Show your supervisor (and your grading instructor) that you know the material.

2. Be sure to include a brief introduction and conclusion to your video.
