6-2 Final Project Part II Milestone One: Draft of Reflection
The client is Amethyst Bay Resort & Spa is a new resort catering to guests on vacation in the St. Thomas area and is looking to target new clientele who have not traveled to the region or attract those who stay at other properties within the area. The client is looking to target the audience with magazine and web banner advertisements, using their existing logo and color profile to create brand familiarization across all platforms.
For the print and digital advertisements, I used two images from the copyright free site, Picjumbo, with a similar profile to be used for a vertical advertisement and a horizontal web banner. The model was sitting poolside, with the sun reflecting to create the mood that is found on a hot summer day. The brand is ultimately looking to sell a lifestyle experience and this imagery aligned with the brands positioning in this market space. Regarding typography, Amethyst Bay insisted on using Arial. However, to assist with conversion the font was changed to Impact as it has a more bold and exciting visual presence across the advertisements.
For the magazine advertisement, the images were first color corrected and masked in Photoshop, then imported into Adobe Illustrator. From there, vector pieces were created to proof the magazine advertisement. For the web banner ad, this was all done in Photoshop using custom created typography effects and the Gif creator.
When starting the initial project, it was always my plan to utilize both selected images – one for vertical and one for horizontal. This came in handy when I started working on the web banner project, as that was a horizontal one that could utilize the other imagery and create a different visual piece while still relating to the campaign. Overall, I felt that creating the Gif was challenging, but the most rewarding as you have the opportunity to create a “flashy” piece to draw attention to your message and what you’re selling, which is what you want most out of an advertisement.
In Module Three, we discussed in great length the ethical concerns and how the industry handles copyright and permission for use of digital images. For this project, the photos were sourced from a copyright free site that clearly states the intention of the photos are for non-commercial use. For the client’s sake, these images would only be able to be utilized for a mood board, unless we contacted the artist to officially license the images for commercial use of the project. Otherwise, we would need to hire a photographer to shoot our own photos or look at other sites for licensing for this use. If the images in this project were used for a commercial purpose without explicit consent, we could face legal trouble and fines for essentially stealing the artists work and not properly crediting or licensing the photos.
