Free Speech

COLLAPSE

The topic of freedom of speech has always been argued back and forth. What should be censored in the media, if anything at all? How much of it should be censored? To many this issue may seem to have blurred lines, however to me it’s much more black and white than that. I believe that freedom of speech should only be extended to messages that do not threaten the safety or basic human rights of an individual or group of people.

I believe that much like other laws, people will use freedom of speech to justify unacceptable behavior. This isn’t to say that you should not be able to express your opinions and beliefs freely. That being said, if those opinions or beliefs directly attack the wellbeing or freedom of any person, then they should not be supported on any platform whether it’s run by the government or public media. The United States needs to do a better job of censoring things that are actually harmful, like hate speech and threats, rather than things that do not cause any harm at all. This isn’t simply being rude or disrespectful. While I personally do not like that kind of behavior, I don’t believe it should be made illegal. However, if an individual writes disparaging or offense comments on their social media pages, then I believe it’s up to their employer to decide if they should be terminated or not. When you make controversial or rude remarks on a public platform you have to be ready to face the consequences, even if they’re as extreme as being fired from your job.

In conclusion, freedom of speech should extend only to messages that do not challenge the freedoms or safety of any individual or group of people. Those whose messages should not be supported include organizations such as the KKK, or any other group of people who threaten or demean others based on gender, sexual orientation, religion, race, or other factors like this.
