CIPD Command Words

Command Verbs

Some guidance and support on this

Analyse

Break down the content of a topic, or issue, into its constituent elements in order to provide an in-depth account and convey an understanding of it.

Outline..., Summarise...

Provide a brief account of relevant information.

Explain.., Why.., Suggest reasons for...

Set out the causes of a phenomenon and/or the factors which influence its form/nature. This usually requires an understanding of processes. Explanation is a higher-level skill than description and this is often reflected in its greater mark weighting.

Evaluate

Consider several options, ideas or arguments and come to a conclusion about their importance/success/worth.

Definitions of Leadership and management:

You need to produce three definitions of leadership and three definitions of management (6 in total) in your own words

For example, ‘leadership has the capacity to influence to achieve a common goal vs management as organising and coordinating activities to achieve common goals’

Underpin with different models/theory:

You need to underpin the above with at least one theory for each - however I would recommend 3 leadership theories and 3 management theories.

Theories you can consider:

Leadership - trait theory, style theories, transactional vs transformational approaches, distributed leadership, situational leadership, contingency theory

Management - behavioural theories, Taylor’s scientific management, Mayo Human Relations Theory, Fayol Six Functions of Management, management processes

A.C 1.1 – Describe a range of meanings attached to the concepts of leadership and management

VLC WEEK 1 & 2

QUESTION

In the Chatbox……

What are the differences between Leadership and Management?

1.2 Justify distinctions drawn between leadership and management.

Explain at least 2 differences between leadership and management

You need to select two areas of leadership and management and then state the characteristics for each and highlight the differences – this could be presented in a table for example:

**If using a table please ensure you include a summary underneath**

For example, Leadership being concerned with visioning and fostering ownership and commitment whilst management focuses on the translation of the vision into practice by organising and co-ordinating others

Leadership Management
Personal Qualities Characteristics of a leader Characteristics of a manager
Relationships Characteristics of a leader Characteristics of a manager

VLC WEEK 2 & 3

2.1 Evaluate a range of approaches for developing leaders and managers

Introduction/context

A very brief paragraph introducing your evaluation i.e. what is leadership and management development? Have you experience of this within your organisation?

Evaluation of approaches

You need to include at least four different approaches for developing leaders and managers – a recommendation would be that for each you include at least two advantages and two disadvantages to evaluate the approaches.

A table can be used for the advantages and disadvantages but you need to include a summary evaluation for each approach underneath

Example’s of approaches could include; action learning, education-based programmes, secondments, job rotation, coaching and/or mentoring programmes, management self-development, secondments, shadowing

VLC WEEK 4

QUESTION

In the Chatbox……

Can you give any examples of how L&D can support the development of Leaders and Managers

2.2 Discuss the role of the L&D function in providing leadership and management development.

Introduction/context:

Set the scene in a very brief paragraph – does your organisation have an L&D function?

The role of L&D in providing leadership and management development:

You need to provide at least five examples of how the L&D function can support leadership and management development

Use separate sub-headings for each example/discussion

Use examples from your own organisation/experience to enhance and underpin

Examples for consideration:

Needs assessment, design and delivery of interventions, identifying and assessing potential leaders, advising on individual and group development and the context/ways of working in which individuals and teams work, evaluating outcomes

*Could use 5 stages of ADDIE (Analyse, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate)*

VLC WEEK 5

ADDIE – A great tool that can be used by L&D in their role in providing leadership and management development.

Analyse: Analyse business problem, skills gap analysis, training needs, timelines, delivery setting, training considerations and any barriers to learning, objectives in line with business need, identify stakeholder needs.

Design: Define the approach of training, learning outcomes develop assessment outcomes, content and exercises, mapping of evaluation methods such as Kirkpatrick.

Develop: Further development of content from design stage, testing of any technology required prior to implementation. Determine delivery methods, produce learning materials. Once the development is completed, it can be implemented – the training can commence.

Implement: Communication of program, materials and resources provided to facilitators of the training session, instruct them in the learning outcomes, facilitate their use of any technology. Opportunity to observe learning & if objectives are being met and delivery of the program.

Evaluate: How well the program participants met the objectives, collect and assess data, share the results with stakeholders. Propose points of improvement, continuous learning, evaluation is an integral part of each step.

3.1 Identify indicators of success for leadership and management development programmes

Identify and explain indicators of success

You need to briefly identify and explain at least four indicators of success

Try and think about your own experience/organisation….how do they/you realise training and development has been successful? What are the key things you could consider?

Some examples to consider:

Retention of Key Employees

Lower Staff Turnover

Participant Satisfaction indicators

Individual Performance Evidence

Training cost

Organisational culture surveys

* You could consider Kirkpatrick's Model

VLC WEEK 6

Kirkpatrick Model of Training Evaluation (1959)

You need to provide a reason/justification for at least three methods for ensuring the success of leadership and management programmes

Explain why your chosen methods are the most appropriate ones to contribute to the success of the leadership and management development programmes

Examples to consider:

360 degree feedback, lessons learnt, interviews and observations of learners, post-training surveys/questionnaires, annual appraisals, existing organisational evaluation/assessment methods, alignment with business objectives, line manager reviews, assessment before and after the training, communicating achievement of success
