I. Planning

Lesson Summary and Focus:

The lesson is about the solar system and will discuss what makes up the solar system, that is, the planets and the sun. The lesson's focus is to allow students to gain knowledge about the solar system; hence will look at the features of each planet making the solar systems.

Instructional Materials, Equipment, and Technology:

The materials for use during the lesson include.

· Textbooks,

· Audio text

· Video

· Graphics such as charts

Classroom and Student Factors:

The classroom and student factors have a great impact on the learning environment. Some classroom factors that will affect learning include race and ethnicity, because the factors may lead to discrimination during learning. The strongest student’s factor that would like to affect learning is a socioeconomic factor because students from the high class will have easy access to learning resources, unlike those from a low class.

National / State Learning Standards:

According to the state learning standards, the standards include

Lesson Focus Question:

What is at the center of the solar system?

Key Vocabulary:

The academic language for the lesson will include:

Sun-the heart/star at the center of the solar system, usually very hot.

Solar system-is the collection of the eight planets and their moons

Planet-a celestial body revolving around the star/sun.

Orbit- a path followed by planets to move around the sun

Instruction and Development:

The instructional strategies for use during the lesson will be visualization that will be enhanced using graphic organizers. The other instructional strategy is cooperative learning will learn as a group to ensure sharing ideas among themselves and develop a whole. Some vocabulary development activities for use will be self-collection, where the students will identify the interesting words from various sources.

Summative Assessment:

The summative assessment will have the following question.

· How many planets make the solar system?

· Which planets have rings?

The summative assessment will help achieve the lesson objectives because it will serve as the basis to evaluate the lesson's understanding in every student.

The differentiation strategies for use will include the varying amount of time, grouping the learners and changing the tasks to differentiate instructions.

Activities for the student will be differentiated basing their interests, level of their understanding and ability.

The differentiation strategies for assessing students in the class will include changing tasks; for instance, the gifted learners may be provided with difficult problems while those with special needs to reduce the task by reducing the number of questions. Another strategy to differentiate assessment is by levelling the assessments.

In the previous lesson, we learned about the environment and energy. From the lesson, various sources constitute energy. Energy can be received from various sources such as biomass, hydro-electricity power, among others.

What are the uses of the energy received from the sun?

Explore

To allow students to explore and gain prior knowledge about the solar system, students will have to watch a video clip about the solar system.

Furthermore, the students will be grouped into small groups and be provided with graphic organizes to check the solar system.

The question to understand their understanding will be.

What is a solar system?

Name the eight planets making a solar system?

Explain

Explain; will be used to check whether the students have understood the material. Thus, the activity for this step will be to name planets and identify the largest planets.

The probing question will be.

Name the eight planets and identify the largest planet?

Name the planet closest to the sun?

Elaborate

Elaborating step furthers understanding of the context; thus, this lesson's activity will check other components found in the solar system. Furthermore, the students will have to check the features of every planet.

The questions will be.

Define what meteors and comets are?

Name the life-supporting planet?

Evaluate

The lesson's formative assessment will be students will be required to provide a paragraph explaining five facts about the solar system.

Reflection

The lesson above has utilized 5E’s methods as a strategy to help students understand the concepts presented about the solar system. Therefore, students have been engaged in 5Es in various ways. For instance, the first ‘E’ which stands for “engage," students have been involved in the lesson by coming up with an antifactory set that reminds students of what was learned in the previous lesson. Furthermore, the antifactory set is used to let students connect the last lesson with today's lesson. The second 'E' is about 'explore’ entails a student's ability to explore concepts. The students have been engaged in 'Explore' in that students have been organized into small groups where they are expected to identify the eight planets. Through, the ‘Explore' students will identify the order in which the planets are arranged and identify the size of different planets.

The third 'E' is "explain" entails students to hear from the teacher, and thus students have been engaged in the "Explain" stage in that students are asked to name the eight planets and name the planet closest to the sun. Thus, the teacher will listen to the student's response and explain it to understand the solar system concept further. Elaborate is the fourth 'E' and focuses on coming up with an extension activity to gain more details about the idea. In the lesson plan, the students have been engaged to 'elaborate' in that; students are required to define the words 'meteors' and 'comets'; hence, they will gain more understanding about the solar system. The last 'E' is 'evaluate' which entails assessing the lesson. Students have been engaged in this part in that, they are required to submit a paragraph explaining the facts from the taught concept.
