Critical Evaluation of Electronic Patients Management System

The application serves to provide patients with an easy access to medical records and history of their illnesses alongside the medication prescribed for each of the illness. This offers a quick preview of how the patient has been managed so far and what other interventions could be put in place should the medication the patient is on not working.

The application provides a three-tier login for healthcare administrators, doctors and patients. Healthcare administrators are responsible for managing the system functionalities and feeding in necessary information for processing and system setup. Each of these users have different roles clearly defined in the role matrix. This avoids mix-up of activities and prevents unauthorized users from gaining access to patient medical records. Security protocols within the application are maintained by ensuring that each user logs in with the correct password, and based on the role assigned to the user by an administrator, they view different pages with different functionalities.

All settings are exclusively handled by healthcare administrators who then set up the required system details to be viewed and or accessed by doctors. Doctors can process patient information with limited capabilities. These limitations prohibit doctors from deleting or editing information fed in by patients. However, doctors can process patients and add their notes to each patient regarding the treatment options, diagnoses and prescriptions they make for each patient.

The application is effective in handling transactional data which is fed from the client application to the database. The segregated services between frontend, backend and the data tiers are effective in ensuring business continuity and easy restoration of any of the affected services. Additionally, they offer modularity and improve performance of the application. Subdividing the application also gives administrators easy tasks for deployment and replication of essential services to ensure loads that are overly used are more distributed on the servers. Redeployment of failed nodes is equally easy since the system administrator can easily isolate and identify failing nodes affecting particular services.

To continue improving the system, better design techniques and bootstrapping options can be incorporated in the system. This would improve the visual appeal of the system and handle events more efficiently by allowing for client-side JavaScript processing instead of handling everything from backend. Likewise, use of lightweight APIs will reduce the processing and wait time by a great magnitude, thereby improving performance of the application and also improving security in overall from man-in-the-middle attacks.
