Leadership in Organizations

A first step towards development

Self-Reflection

The Spiral of Experience

Processes that enhance leadership development

Reflection

Single-loop Learning

Little feedback to confront fundamental beliefs and ideas

Double-loop Learning

Learning how to learn by self-confrontation

and feedback from others

Make the Most Of Your Feedback: Tips from Kouzes & Posner

Look for messages, not measures

Accept feedback as a gift

Take the feedback seriously

Trust the feedback

Value the differences in any observer’s feedback

Plan now to re-administer after you have had time to further develop yourself

Examine Your First Impressions

When you first looked at your feedback, what was your immediate reaction? Describe the feelings you had.

What was your strongest feeling and why did you feel that way?

Explore Consistency

Do you think that you rate yourself higher than, lower than, or about the same as others rate you?

Optional: You may ask others to complete the LSQ and the VLA Assessment about you (a 360° assessment approach). If so, score the results of those and compare them to your self-assessments.

Find Patterns and Listen for Messages

Stand back from the data and see what emerges. Let the data “speak” to you.

What strengths of yours are revealed? Are there any patterns?

What areas of development are noted? Are there any patterns?

Seek Clarification

Provide specific examples of experiences that you have had that confirm or dispute your data.

What data seems confusing, incomplete, or contradictory?

If you do not feel confident in the results, think of some people who could help you interpret and clarify your feedback. What would you ask them?

Developing your Leadership

Focus Your Developmental Efforts

Where would you most like to focus your efforts in improving as a leader?

Prioritize your areas of development.

Imagine Your Ideal Future Self

This picture should show you executing your developmental leadership behaviors significantly better than you are currently doing. Describe your ideal self with respect to these behaviors. Write a positive statement that describes the situation and the way you are behaving.

Example

Developmental Area: “I describe a compelling image of what our future could be like.” Imagine yourself in 2 years doing just that. You could write: “Whenever I talk about our company or team direction, people will comment on how positive and enthusiastic I am about our future. I will be realistic about facts but confident about possibilities.”

Overcome Barriers and Concerns

What gets in your way right now of achieving your ideal image?

Lack of skills, training opportunities

Absence of supportive manager or climate

Limited access to good role models

Few chances for challenging assignments

Fear of losing control of my team

Fear of being seen as weak

Others?

What thoughts do you have about how you might overcome these barriers?

How can you leverage and build upon your strengths to overcome the barriers to make yourself an even better leader?
