Project 2: Rhetorical Analysis of a Language Community – Draft 3
Due: 31 October 2020
Communication in the workplace
The study is based on an English language work community in the workspace Vodafone
Doha. The community comprises of workers, supervisors and managers, and the entire community as a whole. This study's primary purpose is to examine how ideas, orders, and changes in an active community are communicated and adopted. The approach of the study is to question workers about their working environment. In my study, the observational research method is to identify the worker's behavior and why they need to get superior feedback. Interviews are also used in the study as data collection methods to gain deeper and clearer questions on the study topic. The study also focuses on identifying why communication among community workers is essential. The community is well organized, where communication between supervisors and managers communicate to the superior If there is any need. The community uses different communication methods, such as mobile phones, to make communication effective. Therefore, mobile phones are used, especially if the consulting issue needs oral communication or confirming. Emails also are used to pass communication if there might be sending of documents, memo communication, or messaging to one or many people in the organization. The community is governed by a managerial approach where workers rely on advice from the supervisors. Supervisors have the authority to select staff in organizations. Therefore, the supervisor guides the workers by allocating different tasks to every staff. The team every morning holds a meeting before they start their daily tasks to have some briefings. Comment by Mary Queen: ?? Yes, the community is comprised of the community. Why say this? Comment by Mary Queen: Actually, draft 3 is supposed to be a rhetorical analysis. Comment by Mary Queen: I’m unclear what this means. Comment by Mary Queen: This all seems to be focused on what you were required to do in draft 2. However, remember that draft 3 shifts to rhetorically analyzing the community’s communication, interactions, activities, etc. as well as how outsiders perceive the community. Comment by Mary Queen: Focus on being concise. You say the exact same thing in both these sentences. Comment by Mary Queen: This “introductory” paragraph confuses me. What is its main focus?
A few days after visiting Vodafone Doha, there was consistent communication between the subordinates and the lowest levels of workers. The managers and supervisors communicate with superior management only when there is any need. This communication is initiated via social media strategies such as mobile phones by sending emails and memos. In this aspect, the outside community perceives communication as non-effective. For example, the question posed to the workers. Even though they raised ideas, they would not be implemented not communicated to the superiors. The aspect, therefore, makes the workers who are a part of the community feel more oppressed. Therefore, the community perceives that the communication between the workers and the organization is abysmal and discriminative. This is because workers are not allowed to give out opinions and ideas, but the organization management and the superiors dominate in making decisions. The outsider’s value participatory decision making but are not entailed in the organizations and the community. The community generally is not perceived towards making any opinion or giving ideas in the community. The community perceives organization management in matters concerning communication as a very destructive element where workers feel more oppressed. However, hence the communication belief in the participatory element, it is not highly valued. Comment by Mary Queen: ?? Do you mean YOU visited Vodafone? Or?? Comment by Mary Queen: I’m unclear what you mean here. What are “subordinates” and what are lowest levels workers? What communication? Comment by Mary Queen: Didn’t you already make this point in the previous paragraph? Comment by Mary Queen: Social media strategies are not mobile phones, emails, memos. Be very attentive to your sentences. Comment by Mary Queen: What asect? Comment by Mary Queen: What question?? Comment by Mary Queen: Which part of the community? Comment by Mary Queen: What outsiders? Comment by Mary Queen: I am very confused by this paragraph. There seems to be a lot of information you have not included, assuming I know what you’re talking about. Try reading this carefully and slowly and see if you understand what the focus of this paragraph is.
Hence, the organization has different aspects regarding how communication is passed; some insiders have different perceptions. Besides the fact that some community members have ideas and sound opinions, some members moistly the management did not recognize them. During the interview, the interviewees gave responses that proved that some workers were oppressed and more privileged. To determine whether the fact was correct, more interviews were done where the organization's authority was adhered to strictly, and some rules were followed. In the organization, some members are more valued than others; for instance, the organization's communication system and the authority work well only because their opinions were ever listened to and adhered to. However, workers' opinion lowly ranked is not considered; hence, they are not given a chance to communicate them. Some workers' opinions are listened to and adhered to because they are more privileged than others. Also, those workers with authority were more adhered to. The interview identified that the organization community is competitive; hence, some people have authority than others, and other people, regardless of having opinions, are not taken to consideration. Comment by Mary Queen: Avoid “proved.” Nothing is proved except through empirical observation. Do you mean “suggests that”?
While in the organization, Vodafone found that the management tends to carry out knowledge sharing in different approaches. In the morning briefing, supervisors select one of the workers to take others through a lesson about its services. During the moment, all other staff learns new aspects, which helps them understand the organization's leadership and duties better. In case the instructor finds something wrong, he or she is corrected on the spot. In this aspect, the community appreciates other people's collaboration and participation. The aspect polishes their skills during their daily activities. If a worker gets their tasks well done and presents it well, they are thus rewarded, and the process in Vodafone is continuous, and all workers get engaged. From the aspect of using this aspect of a worker taking through some lessons, members in the organization perceive the method of communication as participatory and practical. Also, the aspect of members being rewarded makes them feel proud of the community and feels essential in the community. Therefore, presenting good work by a worker is taken with a lot of consideration in the community. Comment by Mary Queen: ??
The outsiders perceive how logical reasoning is used in the community significant; hence they are given chances to participate in their better outcomes. Moreover, during the introduction of new staff, the workers attempted to welcome new staff. Once the supervisor introduced them, another staff was allocated the task of mentoring the new staff. The new staff is shown their different roles in the organization, which helps them fit faster and adapt to the organizational culture. Comment by Mary Queen: What outsiders?
During the observation, I noted that during morning and evening hours, the staff gathered in different groups to discuss work-related issues and raising any problems. The staff also shared about family issues and educated one another on different issues. Additionally, the aspect made workers feel open to one another and discuss different family problems with their friends. Communication within the same level of workers inside the organization was very efficient.
During my study, I noticed that different people do not communicate. I found out that different people came from different cultures and religions. However, there were rumors about several workers concerning their beliefs, which made them discriminated against and neglected, which affected communication and worker relationships. Some interviews also showed some discrimination aspects where favoritism was from leaders to some workers. The information passed first to supervisors via electronic memo, which jeopardized its flow
The human resource department represents the worker's welfare in the organization and those who have financial and psychological problems. In my research, the findings show that the supervisors and the Human resource department are always willing to listen to their grievances and offer solutions to their problems. The management is very concerned about its staff welfare and the surrounding society. Due to my limited time to research, I observed that staff works towards achieving the organizational goals as a team despite the differences in their beliefs and disagreements. All the set rules are followed and time management.
In conclusion, there was job satisfaction in the organization, and workers worked under little supervision, yet there were productive and efficient and effective workflows. However, some of the oppressed workers' complaints and I concluded that it could not be implemented because they were vague. The problem arose when the supervisors failed to communicate with the workers that some of the ideas brought forward could not be implemented. This resulted in workers adapting to very harsh conditions and orders from the supervisors. Also, the supervisors and junior staff highly respected the seniors for humbling themselves in front of them. This created the command's organizational authority line, where the Junior staff could not report directly to the Seniors without the supervisor's consent. Besides, the seniors' instructions to the supervisors to the junior staff were easily communicated and executed. It applied to upwards communication that is from workers to seniors. It resulted in a smoother workflow since the worker's needs were quickly heard and resolved quickly. Teamwork was encouraged, and discrimination was reduced amongst the workers. The monthly meetings involved both the workers and seniors, creating a forum of discussion on new ideas and changes that need to be made in the organization. The organization does not allow discrimination or oppression. This creates a conducive working environment since communication is very critical in the organization.
Maha: I’m unclear about much of this. Where is the rhetorical analysis? Is this from one observation? From months of observation? How many interviews? Who? Much of this is still focused on draft 2 assignment, and not on actually rhetorically analyzing HOW and WHY various aspects of the community function well and others not so well. Remember that LANGUAGE = RHETORIC. HOW someone communicates and exactly what they say tells us HOW to analyze the effect of the communication on the various members and even on those outside the community. In order to analyze, you need to focus on specific details and examples. I don’t see any details here, just generalities. I suggest you schedule an appointment with me next week to discuss how you might revise this so that it focuses on a rhetorical analysis.
