organizational communication final essay
Your essay for each prompt should draw explicitly from the texts that we have read for this course so far. You do not need to use proper APA citation format, but please make sure that I know from which sources you are drawing, e.g., by referring to the name of the author. As you have been instructed in each prompt, you should strive to draw from multiple sources, rather than to base your essay on a single source, for drawing from multiple sources demonstrates your ability to synthesize course material. Also, when you cite a source, be sure to explore the content and implications of that source for your answer in some depth; in other words, do not mention a source in passing yet give no further insight about its content or relevance. There is no length requirement for these essays. However, I expect that many of you will be able to answer each prompt in an essay that has 3-5 solid main paragraphs.
In grading your essays, I will consider the comprehensiveness of your synthesis, the accuracy and depth of your treatment of each source, and the quality and originality of your insights as you explore the relevance of each source and make connections between it and other sources that we have read.
Prompt 3
Organizations are discursive entities. Even an organization as simple as a small family-run grocery store with a handful of employees working under a couple of owner-proprietors functions through the discursive interactions among members and between members and people outside the organization. Identify three different ways in which an organization such as this family-run grocery store functions through discourse. Be sure to explain any concepts that you incorporate into your answer. Your essay must draw from a minimum of three sources, two of which must come from the following articles: Deetz (2015), Meisenbach (2006), Taylor et al. (1996), McPhee (2004), Clair (1993).
Prompt 4
Power is embedded in the patterns of communication among members of any organization. Power can work in direct interpersonal ways, whereby one person influences the choices that another person makes. Alternatively, it can work through the ideological underpinnings of the organization’s culture. Explain the concept of ideology as defined in the readings from the course. Then, explore three ways in which ideology can work through the culture of an organization to favor certain interests over others. Your essay must draw from a minimum of three sources, two of which must be Mumby (1987) and Clair (1996).
