A07 is 8 percent of the course grade

-=-=-

Individual work.

How submitted:

*** post your file (or files) with your answers to the assignment in Canvas.

MS Word for longer narrative.

If you use software (such as Excel), then also load that file.

If you solve manually or graphically, then best to scan & load that file

The general scenario is that you are working for the company (Light-Up-My-Light, Inc). And need to do certain analytic or managerial work. Obviously (?), the major topics addressed will be the course topics; and more specifically usually the material from the current chapters!

Please remember to:

.a. put your last name in the file name;

Example form student named Jones: 5061-FA22-A07-Jones

.b. include your name in the running head; and

.c. number the pages.

I usually print out your answers and these items on the hard copy help me to identify whose work I am looking at, grading, etc.

Unless other arrangements are made (e.g., you “invoked” an extension), your answers are due according to the class schedule.

#Q1 At the last weekly staff meeting the anticipated changes in the product line for the fourth quarter CY22 (October, November, December) were discussed. The following table was used to summarize the planned actions. These changes were usually done early in the period.

Planned actions 4 Q CY 2022

Action

# models affected

Reason

1

Add new fixtures

4

incorporate newer bulbs into product line

2

Modify design

6

Mounting base for screw or bolt for flexibility; include mounting screws and mounting bolts in the package.

3

Modify design

4

correct non-safety related problems

4

Drop from product line

2

slow selling “dogs”

5

Add new fixtures for quarter

2

incorporate a new holiday motif

Planned future actions had been routinely discussed each quarter. But someone commented (no one remembers exactly who) that in the past these changes had not always gone “so smoothly”.

** Stock might be smaller than needed so sales were lost, etc.

** A comment was made that at times LUML really had egg-on-its-face. Even simple requests for the new or modified fixtures might not be supported. Example was given of not having repair parts on hand when a customer needed to make a repair. Or no stock to replace a part that was damaged in transit and the customer had been told --- Do not return this fixture to the store where you purchased it. Call 1-800-123-4567 and the needed part will be sent to you by priority mail.

** Not being able to provide the customer with basic documents such as a final user/installation manual.

** At times design changes or additions seemed to be made in a vacuum -- so logistics or other departments might not be aware of the details until the fixture was being manufactured.

Again, no one remembers who, but the question was spoken --- well how do we in fact plan for logistics and assess whether or not we can support the systems/products?

In response to this simple question, the silence was deafening.

That was an “a ha” moment.

During the meeting it was agreed that the following points should be looked at. The CEO asked for some written answers on these questions/topics. Naturally since these are logistics related the senior logistician for LUML gets the “honor” of preparing the answers.

Reminder. Other graded elements.

[Note. Probably a page or two on each question (not necessarily each part of the question) should be fine. Could write a great deal on this topic and these questions if so inclined.]

Q#1. (100 points) What might such a review process look like?

(10 sources)

(40 points) All agreed that some kind of a flow diagram (rather than a zillion words) would be useful.

(50 points) [Concise, not-too-wordy] explanation is needed.

Q#2. (100 points) What would LUML management hope to accomplish if LUML did such an analysis?

(10 points) sources

(60 points) What might be the objectives?

(30 points) Would it be prudent to also include fixtures that are being discontinued? Why?

Q#3. (50 points)

(5) sources)

(45) Are there any downsides to doing this type of analysis? Explain.

Q#4. (50) Your recommendation.

Sources if appropriate.

(25) Should LUML establish a policy and procedure that LUML will do a logistics and supportability analysis?

(25) What kinds of actions should be covered (new; changed; etc.)? Explain.

[Hint: there is sometimes a tendency to introduce new “arguments” or points in the recommendation & supporting write-up. We should not really consider points in the conclusion/recommendation that have not been included in previous work.]
