Alabama’s Abortion Ban

On May 2019 Alabama state has signed a bill considering any types of abortion a felony, unless there is a serious health risk to the mother or the unborn child. As this bill is trying to give the unborn child a chance to live, it will have many down the line effects. Women who decide to undergo an abortion have to travel away from their homes to another state, or to do the procedure illegally. Travelling to another state will lead to series of extra expenses to the mother such as commute costs, the procedure and after care expenses (if the insurance doesn’t cover), and costs of having a family member or someone trusted alongside. Not all women can afford to travel out of state, as a result number of illegal procedures, especially in low socioeconomic places will increase. Due to committing a felony and losing medical license, physicians won’t to do the abortion. As a result, uneducated people will do the procedure in dirty and unhealthy places without sterilized equipment used on multiple people and without any after care services. Illegal abortion has serious consequences on the health of the mother. Immediate effects on the physical health include but not limited to infection, hemorrhage, toxic reactions to products placed in the genitals, and chemical or traumatic lesion of the genitals and other organs. Some medium to long term effects are infertility, ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain and other sexual life difficulties. In some sever cases unsafe abortion can lead to death. Death and long-term health problem of women will contribute to large number of PYLL and DALY which will be a burden on the society. Illegal abortion can totally become monopolized by gangs since there are no supervisions. Women who cannot afford the high cost of abortion are forced to carry and deliver the unwanted baby. Those without financial and mental support tend to abandon their child. lucky children will end up in an orphanage which is an extra expense on the society. Those who ended up in gangs are trained for free labor or being trafficked for their organs. If a mother with low socioeconomic statutes decides to raise her infant, she will take and do any job to afford the costs of the baby. As a result, the baby is raised with lack of supervision and care, so he or she might end up having more problems such as joining the gangs, not receiving education or appropriate nutrition, and having mental health problems. These will also be burdens on the community. Some mothers might lose their family support in cases of having a child without being married. The government and society have to prepare and provide appropriate education and jobs for these children. This bill has missed out on the women who are victims of sexual violence. Not only they have mental and physical health problems, they have also carry the fetus in their uterus for 9 months.
