500 Assignment 1 revised outline

Course 500 – Assignment 1

For this assignment, the student should respond to the following scenario:

Consider where you are in your career. Now, think about where you want to be in five or ten years.

• Is it where you are now or somewhere else?

• What do you need to do to achieve your career goal?

Even if you want to stay exactly where you are now, it is important to make a career plan. It may include

new learning or building on competencies to improve on your current strengths.

1. Describe where you are now in your career. 2. Develop a career goal. Clearly outline where you would like to be career-wise in five or ten years.

Be realistic. Describe your opportunities, your anchors, and your stage of life. Define the competencies required to achieve your career goal.

3. Conduct an assessment of your competencies relative to the FNHMA competency standards which can be found in the Certification section of www.fnhma.ca. Your instructor can send you an electronic version to use. Consider whether there are any additional assessment tools you’d use to guide your planning. Include these in the appendix or summarize and reference in your report.

4. Based on your results, identify competency areas that need to be strengthened to be able to achieve your career goals. Describe some ways you will use to improve in those competency areas.

5. Describe any challenges or risks you foresee and how you will manage them. 6. Develop an Action Plan to help you achieve your career goals. 7. Consider the timing of your goals, your resources and how you will hold yourself accountable for

your plan.

Make assumptions as required to demonstrate your knowledge.

Possible approach

1. Begin by reviewing your current career. What position are you in. Are you at the beginning,

middle or end of your career path?

2. What is your career goal? Describe where you would like to see yourself in five or ten years.

What possible options are open to you. What are your anchors (those considerations that hold

you to a certain location or profession)? What competencies would you need to achieve the

career goal that you’ve already identified?

3. Using the FNHMA competency assessment, assess your competencies. Are there any other

assessment tools that you have used or would like to use? Reference these in your report.

4. After your assessments, identify which competencies you’d like to strengthen. What would be

ways to do that? Consider mentoring, training, work experience etc. Be clear how it helps you

achieve what you’re seeking.

5. What challenges or barriers would you anticipate as you strengthen your competencies? (some

examples might be time, funds, lack of confidence, lack of support, difficulty in moving locations,

etc.) Clearly explain how you can manage the risks to achieve your goal.

6. Create an Action Plan (as you’ve done for most of your assignments) that lays out a step by step

plan to achieve your career goals. Consider the short and medium/long term.

7. Explain how you will hold yourself accountable for your plan.

8. Possible appendices – FNHMA competency assessment, previous or other career assessment

results, resume, commitment statement, etc.
