The Danger of Single Stories Comment by Kevin Wachtel: Excellent job on this assignment.

How Single stories emphasize our Differences

Telling single stories advance advances the division between human beings rather that than acknowledge acknowledging the similarity in both potential and weakness of all in the various spheres of life. As Chimamanda Adichie sites in her address, single stories show how weak a people are without recognizing their strengths. After having a single story about a person or a group of people, recipients of the stories develop biases and stereotypes about others and hence developing negative narratives against them (TEDGlobal, 2009). The end result is hostility and animosity between human beings. After a long consumption of single stories, people develop hatred among others and cannot find value in them hence creating conflict and disrespect of others. This is contrary to Paul’s teaching to Galatians in Galatians 3:28 that there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female for we are all one in Christ Jesus.

Dangers of a Single Story at the Workplace

Having watched the dangers of a single story video, I have appreciated the fact that correct human judgment is limited by the single stories we have heard about others who we interact daily or those we are yet to meet in life. Having limited information about the other person might negatively affect my social relationships and therefore trouble my endeavor to create social connections. Additionally, having single stories about my fellow members of staff at my workplace decreases the spirit of cooperation and togetherness, which is vital in team success. Workplaces are only successful when all parties work together, complementing the efforts of others as they do the same to you. However, having stereotypes will create doubt and suspicion between me and other colleagues. This reduces open communication, fosters suspicions and conflicts between the members of staff. The end result is low productivity of the entire workforce.

The American with Disability Act

The Americans with disability act is an amazing legislation in suppressing the single story narrative in all aspects of human activity. This law was enacted in 1990. The law prohibits all kinds of discrimination towards people with disability in places of work and other fields of involvement. The ADA guarantees equal opportunity for all those with any form of disability either physical or mental. The law sites the equality of all human beings both those that are privileged and others who have forms of disability. This law has five subtitles with every subtitle has a unique set of provisions for the especially abled. First, the law focuses on employment where people with disability have access to employment opportunities with equal remuneration of services offered and the provision of workplace facilitation to the special population. Other aspects of the law include state and local government, public accommodations, telecommunications and miscellaneous.

How to Broaden the Sense of Diversity

The lessons offered by the video prompted me to seek the various ways in which I can enhance my sense of diversity. First, I discovered that listening carefully can help me have a good sense of diversity. This implies ridding of other psychological noises such as negative attitudes and predigested thinking which hinder objective listening. Secondly, I realized that through travelling and meeting people of different cultures will boost my development of a balanced stories in understanding and explaining the world. Additionally, I have appreciated the value of reading. Meeting people from different cultures could be expensive and not practical. However, one can meet all these cultures through reading widely from diverse societies to effectively understanding them.
