Introduction
Gender diversity is the equitable representation of people of different genders either in the work place, political positions, or even society leadership.
It is also known as equitable ratio of men to women.
Not only is gender diversity a human rights requirement, but it is also an essential foundation for a prosperous and sustainable society.
Society has socially constructed roles for men and women. The issue of diversity seeks to challenge these norms and ensure there is gender equality across all sectors.
Gender diversity can be defined as the equitable representation of people of different genders either in spaces such as the workplace, political appointments, and society leadership. It can in simple terms be referred to the equitable ration of men to women. This issue is of interest since it is not only a human right requirement, but also an essential foundation upon which a prosperous and sustainable society is built. It is due to the socially constructed roles for men and women that bring about gender inequality. Diversity seeks to address these societal norms that bring about gender inequality.

For a long period of time, men dominated the society .
Women opportunities were limited, and there existed no safe spaces where they could voice their concerns.
These gender inequalities have placed women at a disadvantaged position, in trying to live a fulfilling life.
Areas of inequality range from lack of access to formal education, confinement to undertaking low level and less paying jobs, and the denial of the right to make choices about their bodies.
Since time immemorial, men have dominated the society. This leads to women having limited opportunities and a lack of a safe space where they could voice their concerns. As a result of these gender inequalities, women have ended up at a disadvantaged position, trying to live a fulfilling life. Areas of inequality range from the lack of access to formal education, working in low level and less paying jobs and denial of the right to make choices about their bodies.

Social Issue Related to Diversity-2
To understand the origin of this social issue, we look at how women were treated in some prominent ancient cities.
In Mesopotamia, there was a penalty for women requesting for divorce. Only men could grant one.
In Greece, women were under their guardianship of their father or male relative until marriage, after which their husbands took over.
In Athens, women would only access basic training on housekeeping and other minor informal skills.
In Rome, women had no public roles. They served men.
To understand this social issue better, we look at how prominent ancient cities treated their women. In Mesopotamia, there was a punishment for women who sought for divorces, since it was only permitted for men. In Greece, women were under the guardianship of their father or a male relative, until marriage, after which their husbands took over. In Athens, women would only access basic training on housekeeping and other minor informal skills. In Rome, women had no public roles and were regarded as servants for men.

Impact of Gender Inequality on Society
Gender inequality affects everyone, but women and girls are the most disadvantaged.
Gender stereotyping affects children’s sense of self from a very young age.
In adolescents, gender stereotyping affects their behavior, ambitions, choices, and relationships.
In adults women live a life of less quality due to reasons such as discrimination and less pay for same work as men.
There is less cohesion in an unequal society (Khambule et al., 2017) and people’s well-being is poor.
In general, gender inequality affects everyone in the society. However, women and girls are more disadvantaged. Analyzing through the various age groups, you realize that in children, gender stereotyping affects their sense of self from a very young age. In adolescents, their behavior, ambitions, choices and relationships are affected. In adults, women fail to thrive and live a fulfilling life due to discrimination and less remuneration for the same work done by men. More importantly, there is less cohesion in an unequal society and the well-being of its members is poor.

How Society Impacts Gender Inequality
A society’s culture, values and norms have a significant contribution to gender inequality.
The level of reinforcing these cultural norms promote a continuous cycle of male dominance.
It is unfortunate how a majority of societies value women less compared to men, and condition them to be submissive and subordinate to their male counterparts.
Men are believed to better handle their emotions hence deserving of senior positions (Brescoll and Victoria, 2016).
Lack of adequate policing and legal protection laws in favor of women leaves them exposed .

Individual Framework on Perception
Analyzing this social issue has made me understand that gender equality is a human right.
It is also important to understand gender equality for economic prosperity.
Societies that value men and women in equal measure are more safer and healthier.
Most importantly, gender equality prevents violence perpetrated against women and girls.
This analysis is a wake up call to mobilize institutions to formulate policies that ensure equal representation.
Analyzing this social issue has caused me to realize that gender equality is a human right. It is also clear that for the growth and prosperity of a nations economy, the issue of gender equality should be addressed. Additionally, societies that value men and women equally are more safer and healthier. Most importantly, gender equality helps prevent violence perpetrated against women and girls. Lastly, this is a wake up call to mobilize institutions to formulate policies that ensure equal representation.

Analyzing diversity prompts the need for research on gender representation in diverse populations.
The need for documenting this representation is a matter of social justice for either genders.
While lobbying for gender equality, cultural sensitivity should be observed.

Engaging Constructively with Society
Analyzing diversity enhances individual’s ability to appreciate other cultures.
Considering there are multiple cultures across the world, understanding diversity fosters respect among people one interacts with.
It dispels biases and negative stereotypes about a certain group of people.
It builds trust and understanding among people.
Increased diversity enhances society’s social interactions and integration.
Analyzing diversity influences people’s interactions and creates an understanding of social issues. It enhances an individual’s ability to appreciate other cultures. Considering that there are multiple cultures across the world, understanding diversity foster respect among the people one interacts with. It also dispels biases and negative stereotypes about certain groups of people. Addressing diversity also builds trust and understanding among people. Lastly, increased diversity enhances society’s social interactions and integration.

Recommended Strategies
Change always starts with us. The following strategies can address the issue of diversity in both personal and professional life.
Being mindful of communication: e.g., avoid gender specific words or use of assertive words.
Challenge stereotypes: Avoid unconscious biases
Avoid making assumptions in everyday interactions.
Being aware of individual privileges fosters a more inclusive attitude.
Be open minded and learn sensitive social topics.
It goes without saying that change begins with us. The following strategies can address the issue of diversity in both personal and professional life. Being mindful of one’s communication means that you avoid things such as using gender specific words or assertive words. Secondly, it is important to challenge stereotypes which basically means avoiding unconscious biases. We are also encouraged to avoid making assumptions in our everyday interactions. Furthermore, being aware of individual privileges fosters a more inclusive attitude. Lastly, keeping an open mind promotes learning about sensitive social topics.

Benefits and Challenges of Addressing Diversity
Benefits:
It promotes tolerance and understanding when interacting with different cultures.
Enriches communities through shared experiences with diverse groups.
Challenges:
misconceptions and negative cultural stereotypes make it difficult to address diversity.
There may misunderstandings while addressing diversity due to differences in cultures and languages.
Benefits arising from addressing diversity include the promotion of tolerance and understanding when interacting with different cultures. It also enriches a community though shared experiences with diverse groups. Challenges to addressing diversity include misconceptions and negative cultural stereotypes, and the misunderstandings that may arise due to cultural differences and language barrier.
