5.2 Discussion. Team Leadership

Getting Started

When leaders notice that the team could be more effective, they have a choice to make: they can either monitor the situation to see how it progresses, or they can take action (Northouse, 2022). How do you know when to monitor and when to take action? And when you do take action, do you need to address the task or the relationships? Are the issues internal or external? These are the questions team leaders need to be able to answer, and that will be the focus of this assignment.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

· Identify ways in which leaders can act to positively impact the success of a team.

Instructions

1. Review Discovering Leadership (Middlebrooks et al., 2020) Ch 12, especially pages 314-317.

2. Read, Chapter 16, Team Leadership, from Leadership: Theory and Practice 9th Edition. Request from this chapter from OCLS. (Note. You utilized Northouse’s Leadership Concepts book in your LDR 205 course. The Leadership Theory and Practice text is a different book than the Concepts text.) 

a. If you don’t have this text, you must request this resource directly from Online Campus Library Services (OCLS). OCLS will email the resource to you within two (2) business days, not including weekends and holidays.

b. Please include all the information needed for this request: author, publication year, title, and publication information.

c. Fill out the  OCLS Request Form(new tab) . 

3. Take the Team Excellence and Collaborative Team Leader Questionnaire on pages 493-494. Consider a score of 52-41 strong, 40-39 above average, 28-24 average, 23-12 below average, and 11 or less poor.

4. Record a four-to-five-minute video using the  VideoNote(new tab)  tool answering the questions below and submit it by the fifth day of the workshop.

5. Here are a couple of ideas for you to consider as you prepare to create your video. Please share the following information:

a. What are the key findings from completing the questionnaire?

b. What do the results of the questionnaire reveal to you about the leader of your team?

c. What is one thing you have learned about in this chapter that your team leader could implement to help the team be more successful and how would you recommend they implement this knowledge or skill?

6. You may find it helpful to jot down an outline of topics that you wish to cover as you speak into the camera. Avoid reading a script. Instead, let your personality show through. Don’t worry about trying to make it “perfect,” just be yourself. Your classmates and instructor are eager to get better acquainted with you! Feel free to respond to your classmates and engage with each other.
