4U Investigation: Reaction Rates Names:_______________

A picture containing text, rock Description automatically generatedLimestone is composed mainly of calcium carbonate, CaCO3(s). Limestone formations are also geological indicators of petroleum deposits. Geologists use hydrochloric acid in a field test to detect limestone. The reaction between hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate produces carbon dioxide gas.

CaCO3(s) + 2HCl(aq) CaCl2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

Purpose: To determine the reaction rate at various points during the reaction of hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate, using given data.

Hypothesis:

Write a hypothesis that explains the change in rate of a chemical reaction over time. Then, write a prediction for the shape of the curve for the given data, based on this hypothesis.

Table 1: Concentrations of Hydrochloric acid over time

Analysis:

Your group is to complete a CER chart to explain the change in rate of a chemical reaction over time.

The Claim(s) would be based on your hypothesis, the evidence would be graph/observations from the graph and the reasoning is a written explanation of what is occurring in the graph – including shape of the graph and any supporting calculations.

Your CER chart is due by the end of the period.
