Quantitative Study
The first article used is a quantitative, prospective, non- randomized, multiphase, and multicentered study titled “Effectiveness of a continuous patient position monitoring system in improving hospital turn protocol compliance in an ICU: A multiphase multisite study in India” (Renganathan et al., 2019). In this study, the proposed hypothesis focuses on frequent patient repositioning and how the use of a position monitoring system will increase the compliance of standard turn protocols (Renganathan et al., 2019). The sample within the study is specific and includes a control and intervention group of 40 total patients who are in the ICU and have a Braden scale less than 18 (Renganathan et al., 2019). Phase one patients were the control group whereas phase 2 patients received the intervention of the monitoring system; the overall study included 1450 hours of collected data. Participants who could not wear the sensor or had a pacemaker were excluded from the study (Renganathan et al., 2019). The study was set in Chennai and Trichy, India, due to the increased percentage of hospital acquired pressure injuries compared to the U.K. (Renganathan et al., 2019). The research concluded that those in phase two who wore the monitoring system improved compliance to turning protocol by “80.15 ± 8.97%” compared to phase one “24.36 ± 12.67%” (Renganathan et al., 2019). The nurses stated that the system overall was useful.
Qualitative Study
The next article is a qualitative, exploratory research-based design that employed the use of semi- structured interviews (Barakat- Johnson et al., 2019). The research question focuses on understanding the nurse’s perspective on taking care of pressure injuries and preventing them in the hospital setting (Barakat- Johnson et al., 2018). The sample includes twenty nurses in units where pressure injuries are in high occurrence in Sydney, Australia (Barakat- Johnson et al., 2018). Between May and September 2016, the nurses volunteered to be asked a series of questions during the private interview including “What are the barriers on a day-to-day basis you experience related to prevention and management of HAPI?” and “From your experience, how successful is the current organizational approach to hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI)?” (Barakat- Johnson et al., 2018). The interviews were conducted in a private location of their choosing within the participant’s unit (Barakat- Johnson et al., 2018). The conclusion of the study shows that nurses within the hospital setting face certain barriers that must be addressed by the hospital to allow nurses to implement proper care and preventative measures (Barakat- Johnson et al., 2018). Some common themes found within the study include “managing competing demands in complex clinical settings”; “the importance of knowledge and skill”; “clarifying organizational expectations, purpose and successes”; and “feeling ethically challenged when unable to provide quality patient care” (Barakat- Johnson et al., 2018).
