PRACTICAL EXERCISE PE 2-02-5
TITLE: Military Heritage Essay
INTRODUCTION:
It is a well-accepted fact that the past helps determine the present. Likewise, events and
personalities of the past shape today's military and those same events and personalities will
contribute to the military’s future. The senior enlisted community must make tomorrow's
leaders, regardless of rank, aware of military history so they too can advance in mission and
purpose without having to repeat past mistakes. This exercise provides the student the
opportunity to explore the history and development of the United States/foreign military through
experience, research, and knowledge. Additionally, as Senior Enlisted Leaders, the ability to
develop and submit detailed written projects is essential. Providing information in a well-
prepared and effective document often determines the success or failure of a project.
INFORMATION:
This assignment provides the student an opportunity to apply critical thinking skills in the
development of a fact-based heritage essay. For the purpose of this exercise, the student’s essay
is the basis for a heritage briefing to the command.
ASSIGNMENT:
1. Utilizing the Three-Part Communications Model, prepare an essay based on a military
heritage theme. It may not be a topic the student previously researched, published, or presented.
Everything in this assignment, including the essay, must be unclassified.
2. Students will choose a current policy, process, procedure, custom, event, equipment, ship,
etc. and write an essay on the history, evolution, and effects of this particular topic. Each
student in the group will have a different topic approved by the Faculty Advisor.

Communications. Recall that there are three parts to an essay: introduction, body, and
conclusion. Include a minimum of two main points within the body. Remember to include a
transition sentence between main points.
11. Include any additional information pertinent to the paper. However, the paper must address
the following points. State the factual account of the ship, station, battle, individual, custom,
policy, process, procedure, or event surrounding the origins of the topic. Include how the topic
has evolved over time to become a part of current operations, and state why this topic is an
