1. Internship Description/SMART Goals– Part 1 & Part II. Total 3-4 pages.

Part I - Briefly describe your internship by integrating your responses from the following questions: what type of organization are you working for, what is the organization’s mission/purpose, what is the department/unit/group where you are interning and what does that department provide the organization, and finally, what are you going to be responsible for doing over the course of your internship.

Part II - Along with describing your organization/internship, please identify 3-4 SMART Goals with the action steps you will be taking to meet the goals/objectives you and your supervisor agree that you need to accomplish over the course of your internship. For this part, please write your SMART Goal Statement, then use bullet points to identify very specific action steps you will take to accomplish your SMART Goal.

Please make sure to email your paper to all your PIP partners at least the night before your section meeting. In class, all students will present your paper to your PIPs for discussion/feedback. Part I & Part II together are 3-4 pages.

SMART Goals

A future desire you have is merely a wish or dream, unless you make it into a concrete goal.

Example of a SMART Goal:

I will accept a management analyst position at XYZ Corporation by May 1, 2019 with a starting salary of 42K or more

Specific – management analyst position at XYZ Corporation

Measurable – Yes/No – Did you accept the job offer by May 1, 2019

Attainable/Actionable – This is something that is reasonable for me to achieve (it’s not a VP job for 200K).

Realistic/Relevant/Reflective of Your Values – This is something important for me to do – it provides value either to myself, my organization or my community.

Time –Bound – May 1, 2019 (not some day or hopefully next year)

Just because you write a SMART Goal doesn’t mean it’s going to magically happen – you have to create a reasonable implementation plan by breaking down each part of the goal into clear specific tasks. This is where you will need to determine the Who, What, Where, When, and How each task will be completed.

What might be part of an implementation plan to get the job offer

1. Have done relevant internships and/or other related work volunteer experiences

2. Have completed degree coursework with a 3.0 GPA or higher

3. Joined student and professional organizations and participate in leadership positions

4. Attend regular networking events in my industry/profession

4 Work with the career center counselor at DNCBE and CSUN to update my resume and interviewing skills

5.What Else?___________________________________________________________________

Goal Implementation Steps

Think about it like this

1. Specific Task:

A. When does it need to be accomplished?

B. What activities are involved in fulfilling the task?

C. How will they be completed?

D. Who will be doing what aspects of the activities?

E. When or Where will the activities occur?

Create your own time line identifying each task to be accomplished that will eventually lead to the fulfillment of your goal.
