Describe your current knowledge of public health nursing and provide specific examples of public health activities in your community.

My current knowledge of public health nursing is aiding the underserved and enhancing access to care.  Yet, as I read my public health text from class NURS 340A, I realized it is more than the following.  Public health entails the prevention of disease and the safety of a population. (Lancaster, n.d.).  This specific category of nursing involves creating and influencing public policy for the greater good.  Moreover, abling a good quality of life for those in our society.  One example in my community of Marina Del Rey, CA, is the prohibition of smoking cigarettes in restaurants. Anti-Smoking Ordinance Enforcement California Labor Code 6404.5 bans smoking in places of employment. (Los Angeles Fire Department, 2020).   The ensuing protects the general population from lung illness related to secondhand smoke.  Thereby, preventing disease and reducing healthcare costs. (Lancaster, n.d.).

I know that the notion of public health nursing refers to nursing strategies aimed at promoting public health in a particular

community. Nurses engaged in such an occupation work on "tasks related to clinical diagnostics and treatment,

epidemiology, statistics, health promotion, disease surveillance, community health assessment, and policy development"

(Beck & Boulton, 2016). When it comes to public health nursing, specific communities play the roles of essential units, while

professional activities of employees from the analyzed domain is focused on a specific population. In this case, much

depends on monitoring the health of the population, along with anticipating and preventing epidemiological situations that

may affect it (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2015). Besides, I realize that engagement in this sphere requires healthcare

professionals to pay much attention to public health policies and other factors that indirectly affect their job.

I understand that public health activities are densely tied to my professional community, namely one of a rehabilitation

center. After all, such facilities are related to the sphere of public health nursing. The point is that public health nursing

focuses on the optimized health of society, while rehabilitation centers aim to optimize people's participation in the

community (Danquah-Amoah, & Charan, 2017). Quite recently, there were numerous conferences aimed at introducing our

center's screening program. Its primary activities are interviewing and testing the health of local people. According to the

essential principles of public health nursing, this program will collect information on members of our community. Later,

such data will be used to develop policies and preventive measures that will decrease the threats of substance abuse

among people with an experience of treatment in our center.
