THERMAL STRESSORS

Thermal Stressors Report

BSCI has been contracted by Acme Manufacturing Co. to conduct a study at one of its facilities to determine employee exposures to various thermal stressors at different times. I will conduct a study for two different times of the year of 2012. The first study will be in January, and the second study will be in the month of July. The study will consist monitoring security personnel. There are three entry areas that need monitoring, none of the entries have heating or cooling. The only opportunity to rehydrate is made during the break or meal periods, hand there are no drinking fountains or coolers in the security booths. All of these things should be of concern. I will calculate the wind chill factor and wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) for the North, South and East entrances.

January wind chill factor calculations findings

North Entrance

Wind chill (F)= 35.74 + 0.6215(-3) – 35.75(200.16) + 0.4275(-3) (200.16)

= 35.74 + (-1.8645) – 35.75(1.61) +(- 1.2825) (1.61)

= 35.74 + (-1.8645) – 57.5575 + (- 2.06)

= 35.74 – 61.482

= - 25.7 or - 26 F

South Entrance

Wind chill (F)= 35.74 + 0.6215(-4) – 35.75(260.16) + 0.4275(-4) (260.16)

= 35.74 + (-2.486) – 35.75(1.68) +(- 1.71) (1.68)

= 35.74 + (-2.486) – 60.06 + (- 2.87)

= 35.74 – 65.416

= -29.676 or -30 F

East Entrance

Wind chill (F)= 35.74 + 0.6215(-6) – 35.75(17.16) + 0.4275(-6) (17.16)

= 35.74 + (-3.729) – 35.75 (1.57) + (-2.565) (1.57)

= 35.74 + (-3.729) – 56.13+ (- 4.03)

= 35.74 – 63.889

= -28.148 or -28 F

July WBGT factor calculations findings

North Entrance

WBGT = 0.7(98) + 0.2(92) + 0.1(89)

WBGT = 68.6 + 18.4 + 8.9

WBGT = 96 °F

South Entrance

WBGT = 0.7(98) + 0.2(92) + 0.1(89)

WBGT = 68.6 + 18.4 + 8.9

WBGT = 96 °F

East Entrance

WBGT = 0.7(99) + 0.2(87) + 0.1(88)

WBGT = 69.3 + 17.4 + 8.8

WBGT = 96 °F
