Background and Problem statement.

The increase in the number of online e-commerce systems globally has skyrocketed and therefore leading to a slow decrease in sales for brick and mortar stores that have not yet evolved into e-commerce sites. Therefore my proposal is to develop an e-commerce website for this stores in order to generate more sales. Furthermore, not only will it generate more sales and profits for their parent company, they will also be able to reward their most loyal customers using this platform with services like free delivery and other services.

The current system in use is a purely brick and mortar stores where customers come to the shop and purchase their products. In cases of large purchases including large products like fridges and machinery, the store offers free delivery and installation of the product.

Requirements

The proposed project will need to have several requirements implemented within the system to ensure the best functionality for this system.

1. Responsive web design

The design used in creating the website should consider the different types of users who visit the website. Different users have different devices, it, therefore, will be very considerate to have the website responsive to both small and large displays to display the same content on the website.

2. Attractive and easy to navigate UI

The website design should be full of liveliness and also have design enhancements that attract buyers who buy products without second thoughts. Both the websites logo and the colour used in its design should attract users.

3. Speedy page loading

The e-commerce page needs to be engineered to be fast to load the page and also able to run search and filter functions effectively while not compromising on the integrity of the user's data on the website.

4. Provision of product details

The platform needs to provide legitimate user product information in order to promote their efficiency and effective e-commerce website. This can be implemented by ensuring that all the products listed on the website are branded and the product developers provide enough information concerning the product that is listed.

The product listing should also be able to show whether an item is available by having a category function that shows whether an item is active or inactive.

An image of the product being listed also provides extra confirmation on the product by providing surety.

5. Search and filter function

The e-commerce platform should have the functionality to have users able to search for a specific product. This can be implemented by branding each item and making sure these products are easily identified by the name they are advertised by. Apart from branding, the development of the e-commerce platform should also be aware to categories each item in its proper category. This makes the search function far more usable and efficient for the user therefore able to find and select and product of their choice.

6. Reviews

The platform should also grant users the ability to review products they have acquired through this e-commerce website. The use of reviews helps buyers to be more aware of the products they are purchasing through the platform. Not only does it help the buyers, it also promotes honesty and authenticity from the sellers who post their products online.

7. Shopping cart

A shopping cart is a very handy tool for e-commerce platforms. It gives users the ability to add products of their choice to this tool. It helps users to save and recover products they wish to buy through the platform. In addition to this, it also provides additional services to the user. Services such as show if a product that was already in the cart if it is out of stock. In this case, the product becomes greyed out until it is back in the inventory. This feature, however, is only available for users who have user accounts and are signed into the website.

A shopping cart also automates the checkout option with far advanced services like the option to update the shipping information of the products the user I purchasing as well as deciding the payment option of their choice. Most platforms accept third-party APIs for payments since they do not accept petty cash.

8. Track and Return information

The return policy is also useful for users who are not contented with the products they have purchased through the platform. Once a purchase has been made the user can also track the order to identify the progress in the delivery of their order.

9. Content and catalogue management

The content listed on the platform needs to be constantly updated so as the administrator and the company behind the website can ensure that they provide quality information and services concerning the listed products.
