Omar,

After evaluating both case study I found how two communities can be so identical many miles apart from each other. Lee County FL, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg NC. Both communities face similar natural hazards, floods, tropical storms, hurricanes, drought, and wildfires. Both counties include multiples municipalities. Lee county's major hazard will come from Hurricanes, tropical storms, and drought. While Charlotte-Mecklenburg shares some of the same hazards this county faces a winter hazard also.

Lee county's growth in population and decades of urbanization on its natural environment force the county and its municipalities to created and adopted a collaborative Joint Unified local  Mitigation strategy. Charlotte-Mecklenburg also had their municipalities join together to establish their integration to mitigation plans. Both counties implement their hazard mitigation and integration to address current and future hazards in the communities.

We can observe that both counties had miles of shorelines making them vulnerable to floods and other hazards. Lee county Integrated Implementation Technique allowed the county to adopted goals, objectives, and policies, also allow the county to revise the major policies but allowed for the implementation of those policies through zoning, building, and site plan review. Both counties focus their attention on the vulnerability of the communities and ensure that all-hazard mitigation plans are implemented and review to ensure the safety of their municipalities.  Both counties had become more vulnerable to hazards due to land development, the population growth had made the county more vulnerable as these counties lose their natural resources. With the implementation of collaborative work from each municipality the counties can establish a plan to ensure their communities are safe and be able to overcome a disaster.

Both counties focus their attention on land development, reviewing policies and guidelines to ensure mapping and zoning of future developments are far from hazardous areas. I believe that by bringing together the municipalities the county will have a better understanding of the hazards, how they will affect the communities and how they can overcome the disaster.

Ricardo,

After reading the two case studies, Lee County FL, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg NC may be in two different geographical locations, but they are both in locations that are prone to major weather-related hazards.  The hazards that Lee County FL, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg NC face due to being on miles of shoreline, are mostly water and high winds, such as tropical storms and hurricanes and floods as well as droughts and wildfires.

As a result of decades of urban growth, Lee County FL and Charlotte-Mecklenburg NC along with neighboring municipalities, adopted a comprehensive plan that mitigated any current or future development such as the Joint Unified Local Mitigation strategy for Lee County FL and the Hazard Mitigation Planning Initiative for Charlotte-Mecklenburg NC.  The two plans where devised by the county and cities joining forces to tackle a common goal.  As the case studies reveal similarities, it also points out some differences.  Lee County FL, vulnerability analysis shows the city’s population being affected, whereas Charlotte-Mecklenburg NC vulnerability analysis shows an estimated loss of property.  One last interesting and valuable point that was publicized, while was Charlotte-Mecklenburg NC is focused on the cost of an emergency, Lee County, FL would rather focus on the lives that are affected by the  hazards.

The point that I find the most critical, is the land development.  Lee County FL and Charlotte-Mecklenburg NC are very susceptible to frequent flooding damages based on the location of the two counties, due to the hurricanes, tropical storms and thunderstorms.
