OVERALL COMMENTS

I believe you looked at this assignment too broadly and talked about covering your entire safety plan and education that will be done or what will be taught as part of the curriculum. The requirement for this assessment is to create a message around a specific topic regarding safe medication administration and how to gear activities toward that topic so your target audience may learn and practice. You are presenting to an audience of nurses that need to learn a skill to improve patient outcomes. You have a great start; you just need to be more specific. I've broken down the explanation by criterion below to hopefully give additional clarification. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Here I'd like to see you explain why this skill is important. How can implementing this new skill impact the organization? Why should your audience care? You nicely discussed the goal of med administration safety outcomes along with the relevance to the organization.

Faculty Comments:

This is where you want the audience to practice their new skill and enhance their learning. You want them to put the education you provide into action. Refer to your goals in criterion 1. What can you have the audience do? This could be role play. This could be reviewing a case scenario. You want them to actually learn a skill or improve on a current skill, not memorize facts or theories associated with safe medication administration.

COMPETENCY 2

Explain the nurse's role in coordinating care to enhance quality and reduce costs.

Basic

Lists with insufficient clarity the purpose and goals of an in-service session on safe medication administration for nurses.

Non-Performance

Faculty Comments:

-         Here you introduce yourself. âHello, my name is ______. Today I will be teaching you_____. The purpose of this in-service session is to improve safety and decrease risks associated with medication administration.â

-         You need to have specific goals that you want your audience to learn by the end of the session. For example â learn to use barcode medication administration.

Remember the goals need to be achievable by the end of the in-service. Don't aim too high! For instance, if you were teaching about cardiac medications - you wouldn't expect your audience to know the dosing, side effects, and contraindications of all cardiac meds; but, you could expect them to learn 2 or 3 in a short period of time. The same thing with your safety plan, you can't expect your audience to adapt to all changes - look at making one change, such as utilizing barcodes when administering medications.

CRITERION

Explain audience's role in and importance of making the improvement plan focusing on medication administration successful.

Your result: Basic

Distinguished

Non-Performance

Does not describe the audience's role in and importance of making the improvement plan focusing on medication administration successful.

Faculty Comments:

Here is where you become a salesperson. Tell the audience of nurses why they are so vital to the success of this safety improvement plan. You are asking your audience to learn and implement a new skill or change how they practice a current skill, which likely means more work for the same amount of pay. You need to get the audience vested in the changes and create a buy-in where they want to participate. Focus more on what you are teaching them instead of the entire improvement plan as a whole. Why is it vital for the nurses to use this new skill?
