4.3 Assignment. Psychological Empowerment
Getting Started
One of the aspects that leaders face when developing teams and assigning teams to projects is trust. However, as part of trust leaders must empower individuals and team members to make decisions and be effective. Empowerment can be difficult because there is a connection between leadership style and how leaders perceive teams should operate. When you reflect on experiences you have had either selecting a team or being a part of a team, did you feel empowered? If you were a leader, did you empower members of the team? How? Are you sure? What would your team members say if asked? More importantly, was there a relationship of trust between the leader and team members? All these items are related to psychological empowerment and how one feels or experiences the team and organizational behavior environment.
As you begin this assignment, you will examine empowerment, psychological empowerment, leadership styles, and trust. Consider the variables that are a part of psychological empowerment and how trust is an important part of leadership, followership, and teams.
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
· Distinguish empowerment and psychological empowerment.
· Describe how leaders use empowerment at the individual and team levels.
· Explain the role of trust and its relationship to empowerment.
Background Information
Leaders may use the word “empower” as they assign projects and tasks to their employees and followers. However, to truly empower an employee/follower, leaders must equip the person with all the resources needed to complete the task. Leaders must make it known that the person has the decision-making authority and should be supported. Psychological empowerment is important because it allows one to look inward, supports their development, identity, commitment, and helps stimulate organizational citizenship behaviors.
