4.2 Discussion. What I’ve Heard

Getting Started

Text, letter Description automatically generatedDo you have any leadership role models? Have you had leaders in your life that you want to be like in your leadership roles? What did they say? What did they do that causes you to want to emulate them?

While we often think of positive role models, we can also have negative ones. That is, sometimes we have leaders that we don’t want to be like. Have you had any such leaders in your life?

An important idea is that we learn from others. We learn from their examples. We can even learn from their experiences. This assignment will give you the opportunity to summarize important learning from the leaders you have interviewed throughout your degree program.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

· Articulate important learning from key leaders.

Background Information

How many different leaders did you talk to while doing the Leader2Leader conversations in your LDR courses? While much can be learned from books and videos, perhaps nothing is more powerful than simply talking and listening to someone about their real-life experiences as a leader. No one leader has all the answers. Everyone’s experience can be different. The situational nature of leadership means that something that you heard from one leader that “works here” might not “work there.” Thus, synthesizing all your conversations and looking for places of similarity and dissimilarity in the points of view of your leader conversations can provide important ways to learn from these role models.

This video, " Leadership is a Choice (new tab) ," contains lots of good leadership principles or recommendations from a popular expert, Simon Sinek:

Instructions

1. Read Chapters 7 and 8 in the course text,  Leadership in Christian Perspective.

2. Review the information in the Getting Started and Background Information sections.

3. Review your reports and other materials associated with the Leader2Leader interviews that you conducted during your degree program.

4. Look ahead to  Assignment 4.3 (new tab)  to understand the parts of your Capstone Project that you will submit this workshop.

5. Consider the following prompts:

a. When you compare (similar) and contrast (different) the viewpoints of the leaders you talked to, what are the key ideas that emerge?

b. Are there any ideas about leading that seemed to be a common theme among many of your leaders' perspectives?

c. In retrospect, what are some questions that you wished you had asked? Why?

6. Compose a 250 to 300-word initial post. You do not need to answer each of the prompts. Rather, use them to stimulate your thinking. Complete reading, research, and review to make your post that might also help you start to develop your Assignment 4.3.
