Getting Started

Throughout this course, you will engage in a series of discussion board assignments relating to "Biblical Wisdom." Typically, each week there will be a posted question to which you will be required to respond. It is expected that this initial response be a minimum of one paragraph in length. You will also be required to respond to one other student. These responses should be substantive in nature.

At Indiana Wesleyan University, a key component in our mission is, "…changing the world by developing students in character…" We believe character building is rooted in Biblical wisdom, to the extent it is the cornerstone joining every course to a Christ-centered worldview. As you prepare for each workshop in this course, we ask that you begin with a devotion highlighting a relevant passage from the Bible and discovering how it might apply to your life, character, and to this course.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

· Explain why law enforcement officers must be able to be dominating, and how they can maintain a servant-oriented personality.

Resources

· Bible

Background Information

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

James 1:2–4 (NIV)

Law enforcement officers must exercise authority to effectively enforce the law and must engage in behavior that reflects the special status they hold in society. Certain status-related behaviors include dominance and assertiveness, yet on other occasions, they must endure hostility and accommodate others in a way they may not do personally.

Over time, these traits can become ingrained in an officer, possibly defaulting to a dominating style of policing. When an officer is called upon to be dominating in one circumstance and accommodating in the next, it can be difficult to switch between the required styles. While difficult, enduring such trials can also produce perseverance, leading to personal growth.

Instructions

1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.

2. Navigate to the threaded discussion and respond to the following prompts:

a. Why do some officers default to an authoritarian style of policing, while others become servant oriented?

b. How can an officer persevere through hostility and emerge as a servant? Can this experience increase faith for the Christian law enforcement officer? Provide examples to support your position.

c. What characteristics do you think would be important to be perceived as authoritarian, while still maintaining humility and being servant-oriented?

d. Defend your answer and be substantive in your response.
