Inspiration Article Assignment

For Prompts A and B

To get your research paper moving along, this assignment asks you to find a recent article on a topic that you find interesting--a topic you are considering for your research paper.

This will be your “inspiration” article on which you base your paper. To find your article, please look in sources such as The New York Times, The LA Times, The Wall Street Journal, Vice.com, Propublica, Reveal, possibly even Buzzfeed.* If you are unsure if your article or source is appropriate, please see me. Based on this article, you will tackle more complex and abstract ideas in your research paper. In other words, this article is the start of a longer conversation and exploration of your issue.

You should locate a news article, meaning one that is objective, recent, and relevant. Do not use a book, movie review, opinion article, blog, etc. Rather, your source article must be from a credible news source and be a minimum of 600 words in length. Articles shorter than that would not have the depth you will need to get going on your project.

*Note that Vice, Propublica, and Reveal are websites for investigative journalism--stories that shed light on problems in society, government, and the economy (among other realms).
