Re: Topic 5 DQ 2
Hello Class!
Without a doubt, the most interesting thing that I found out about the Mormon religion is that their policy regarding clean living actually grants them a much longer life expectancy than the population average. UCLA actually did a 14 year study tracking the mortality rates and health practices of 10,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California, indicating that Church members who adhered to the health code had one of the lowest death rates from cancer and cardiovascular disease in the United States. In addition, it was discovered that members that followed the code had a life expectancy 8-11 years longer than the average general population for whites living in the United States. Whites because Mormons constist mostly of whites, however there is also a very large polynesian population due to the Mormon missionaries that went to the Hawaiian islands to spread their religion. According to some articles that I read, it is not uncommon to see Tongan and Samoan gang members at church every Sunday in Salt Lake City Utah.
Sincerely,
-Bradley Bates

Lifestyle The health code for Latter-day Saints is based on a teaching regarding foods that are healthy and substances that are not good for the human body. Accordingly, alcohol, tobacco, tea, coffee and illegal drugs are forbidden. A 14-year UCLA study, completed in 1997, tracked mortality rates and health practices of 10,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California, indicating that Church members who adhered to the health code had one of the lowest death rates from cancer and cardiovascular disease in the United States. It also found that Church members who followed the code had a life expectancy eight to 11 years longer than the general white population of the United States.

Rituals The rituals of the Mormon faith include ceremonies performed in the temple -- endowment, baptism of the dead, celestial marriage, and family sealings -- plus several ceremonies that take place in Mormon chapels. The naming and blessing of infants -- performed by a priesthood holder, often the baby's father -- takes place in the chapel. Baptisms are held in the chapels when Mormon children turn 8 years old or when an adult converts to the faith. Family and friends generally attend both rituals. The Latter-day Saints also have a practice of anointing and blessing the sick if an ill individual so desires. |

Organization 1. Headquarters The Church is led by 15 apostles. The most senior apostle is the president of the Church, and he selects two other apostles as counselors. These three function as the First Presidency, which is the highest governing body of the Church. Twelve others form the Quorum of the Twelve — the second-highest governing body of the Church. Together, the First Presidency and the Twelve oversee the entire Church. Church members trace this organizational structure to the New Testament. Leaders called seventies — another New Testament office — assist the Twelve Apostles and serve in various locations throughout the world. There are currently eight quorums of the Seventy. Each quorum may have up to 70 members. 1. Local Congregations The leader of a congregation is called a bishop. His administrative "parish" is called a ward. Stake presidents and bishops are the leaders most encountered by the broad membership of the Church. These leaders are unsalaried and have a significant amount of local autonomy. 1. Support Organizations The Church provides local auxiliary organizations called Relief Society, Sunday School, Young Men, Young Women and Primary. The Church operates an educational system, a welfare system, and a missionary program.
