Discussion Post 1

System requirements are the configuration that a system must have in order to operate smoothly. System requirements are also considered the minimum systems requirements ("What are System Requirements? - Definition from Techopedia," n.d.). Many of the system requirements support each other to make the informational system more efficient (i.e. availability, reliability, portability,etc.). One system requirement that sometimes gets overlooked for its importance as a part of the system is User Authentication.

User authentication prevents unauthorized access to a part or parts of an informational system. The way that user authentication plays a part in a system requirement is by ensuring that unauthorized persons do not gain access to matters such as PII.

MTC Human Resources should be keenly aware of this attribute because of the high probability that they will run background checks on those in their applicant pool. Due to the nature of background checks and much of the information that said background check would disclose, proper user authentication would be critical. ("Employment Background Checks without Employee's Permission," n.d.).

When it comes to system requirements, availability is the period of times in which the system is to be operational and usable (Requirements, 2018). This is a key factor in the performance of a system within a company. If there is to be maintenance on the system or testing done to the system at any time, this effects the availability and thus the workflow is halted. When such instances occur, there should be a company wide notification sent out in advance so employees can plan accordingly, and the notification should display a time for interruption and a length of duration so employees can plan accordingly.

The system requirement of availability is important to  MTC as there are multiple departments and users that will be coordinating through the system at all times and availability for all parties involved is essential for maximum system performance. In order to get real time answers and make decisions for hiring, knowing how many specific qualified applicants there are, or overall numbers of potential employees in the pipeline to bid on future contracts, many employees from the top down in the company will need around the clock availability to the system. Also, MTC is looking to expand internationally  with their talent as well as there working locations, so availability of the system will be instrumental in their potential growth and future profits as employees from around the world will be using it at all times.

For this assignment, I chose usability, because I think that this important when it comes to end-user usability. Usability is the balance needed for how easy a user can access a system. Whether its two password authentication or a specific number assigned to an employee. This identifies how an organization should create its password policy (Information Systems Security 2019). What this means is whatever organization than an individual belongs to, there is a mandated authentication system that every employee is required to use. This system has to be feasible, meaning that the password should not be too long, or too short. A long password would prompt the employee to write down the information, where it can become vulnerable. If the password is too short it can be easily guessed even if very little personal information is known about the individual.

Usability is important because a lot of IT professionals use computers and cell phones to conduct business. Unauthorized access is a potentially major problem for anyone who uses a computer or high-tech devices such as smartphones or tablets. Even a low-grade hacker could run a script on a not-so-clever password. Usability is important today, many cybercrimes occur because of a lack of security measures("Why Password Management is So Important", 2019)

This will be important to the MTC hiring system because it would make the process more secure. A lot of the time when it comes to IT professionals,  potential hires tend to be targeted when it comes to hackers there may be instances where they can be converted into an insider threat. With the proper protection and layered authentication, new hires information will be protected.
