According to the Canadian Cancer Society, cancer accounts for approximately 30 per cent of all

deaths in Canada. Just under 197,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year with

approximately 78,000 cancer deaths expected in 2015, not including the over 78,000 new non-

“All of these rewards and accolades are not only the result of cheating, some are also gotten at the

expense of other students – perhaps ones who did not cheat. Academic dishonesty gives cheaters

an unfair advantage over honest students, and it misleads proud parents and dedicated teachers”

(Hudgens).

The ice that covers Greenland holds approximately 10 percent of Earth’s frozen freshwater. “Using

the latest technology to map what’s hidden beneath — and within — Greenland’s ice, researchers

have found huge ancient river systems, unexpected ice flow, and troubling melting patterns”

(Mason).

While Canada has joined a growing list of nations “bound by international law to refrain from

engaging in capital punishment, the process by which the abolitionist norm was advanced in

Canada was not an easy one” (Thompson 173) . Indeed, moving from the concept of human rights

to ultimately having that idea adopted by the society as the new norm is often long and difficult.

The name, Ichabod Crane, was well chosen. The author describes his physical appearance as

like that of a big, gangly sort of bird. ”He was tall, but exceedingly lank, with narrow shoulders,

long arms and legs, hands that dangled a mile out of his sleeves, feet that might have served for

shovels, and his whole frame most loosely hung together” (Irving 21).

Online Video Evolutionary biologist and ichthyologist Prosanta Chakrabarty explores hidden parts of the world

studying cavefish whose adaptations to their environment provide important clues about biology

and geology. By observing them, Chakrabarty claims their blindness tells us a lot about how

sight evolved and how and where they live tells us a great deal about “how the landmasses

around them have changed and moved” over time (00:00:57-00:01:09).

To Kill a Mockingbird paints a vivid picture of the racial tensions in the southern U.S. town of

Maycomb after a black man is accused of raping a white woman. Atticus, the local well-

respected white lawyer has taken on his defence, despite the rising tensions and disapproval of

his white neighbours. Atticus was good at managing conflict. “With his infinite capacity for

calming turbulent seas, he could make a rape case as dry as a sermon” ( ).
