MGT (ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR)
MGT 301. Organizational Behavior
Instructor: Harry Joo
Z302 – Spring 2013 Time Management Fundamentals
Causal claims identified in the movie
- By Fletcher (i.e., the band director)
- Abuse (e.g., cussing, slapping, throwing chair) leads to greater player performance
- Prolonged chronic stress makes one stronger.
- Lack of knowledge has worse influence on band performance than dishonesty.
- Job insecurity through competition with peers improves band performance
- By Andrew (i.e., the drummer, main character)
- Practicing as long as possible (e.g., work through hands bleeding) improves one’s skill over time.
- Success requires sacrificing relationships (e.g., breaking up with romantic partners, preventing friendships)

Other discussion points
- Did you ever have a teacher, coach, boss, etc. like Fletcher?
- Have you known anyone like Andrew (the main character and drummer)? Do you identify yourself with him?
- How important is success to you? What are the costs that you are willing to pay? Do you really get to choose or only look back at what happened?
- Who won?

What the next several classes will look like
- Feb 13 (Tues) for section N3 or Feb 15 (Thur) for section 4: Personality and cultural values (session A)
- I will email each team a scanned copy of your designated chapter. But, I need an email from each team asking for their designated chapter with all team members cc’d in the email; then I will hit “rely all” with the chapter attached.
- Slide decks for teams are now available on Isidore (Resources -> “Slides for teams to use in session As” folder -> Identify by your designated chapter).
Advice: Try not to straight up read from notes, which is the most boring way to help others learn. Instead, simulate active participation and interest. For example, incorporate many class discussion points, discuss mini-cases with classmates, facilitate group activities, play short video clips, distribute hand-outs, and even administer pop quizzes. Stand up! I will also stand right next to you, provide you with moral support, and chip in from time to time (e.g., if the class falls silent at one moment).
