News Briefs Assignment

Due: Thursday, Sept. 28

Assignment: Choose five (5) items from the Pew Research Center’s website at http://www.pewresearch.org/. Write a news brief based on each item. The news brief must meet the following guidelines:

· Include in the lede the most important aspects of WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOW (also WHY IT MATTERS and HOW IT COMPARES) in the story.

· Base your choice of lede information on the news values we discussed in class.

· Your lede sentence must be 25 words or less.

· Your total news brief must be between 150-200 words.

· Your information must be attributed to the correct source(s) in the body of the news brief.

GRADING RUBRIC:

Each news brief is worth 20 points x 5 briefs = 100 points total.

_____ LEDE: Does your lede sentence capture the most newsworthy information? (5 points)

_____ ACCURACY: Do you cite your information correctly, based on the Pew Research Center’s information? (10 points)

_____ GRAMMAR/SPELLING/CONCISENESS (5 points)

TIPS:

· Limit your focus to one or two key findings in each brief. You can refer people to a website or other publication for more information.

· Remember to write concisely — subject, verb, object; don’t use five words when one will do.

· Proofread! Accuracy is crucial.
