Your task is to write a 2-3-page reaction paper, typed, double-spaced, with a theme incorporating ideas from:

(a) discussions in class about the characteristics of art (see class notes and p. 2, Chapter 1, text), and purposes of art relevant to the exhibit

(b) art through the ages and early efforts to express spiritualism (e.g., cave art) relevant to the exhibit, and

(c) the development of cognitive abilities and indicate emotions, relevant to the exhibit (see Chapter 1, text).

Specifically, produce an analysis of the art in the exhibit we saw at the Dayton Art Institute. Your focus in the analysis should be on key characteristics of one art work that you select as representative of the ideas I have listed above as they relate to the goals of this exhibit. The exhibit has been curated to show how the arts of Buddhism, a major religion of the world, play a fundamental role in sharing its message of compassion and mindfulness. Use the art example you select to exemplify these ideas discussed in the text and class, and explain how the art you see in the exhibit appeals to the viewer’s senses and mind to enhance devotional practices. While most of us are not of the Buddhist faith, we can use our own faith and faith practices to relate to what we see in the exhibit.

Remember to present a thesis in your first paragraph. This thesis should be specific and relate to the ideas in the two paragraphs, above. The remainder of your paper will then explain and give examples from the art work you select to support your thesis. Write a clear, coherent, organized analysis of your experience, based on what I have described in this handout. Use features of the artwork to support the analysis. Give the name of the artwork you select, include a small snapshot that you take of it with your cell phone (if allowed, but no flash), or a postcard, from the gift shop, showing the art work you have selected. You do not need to describe the artwork to me other than how it exemplifies your points.

In organizing and writing your paper, consult the rubric that follows. Be sure to check your paper for typos and correct for spelling and grammatical errors before submitting. In addition to point deductions for failing to state your thesis clearly, define relevant terms, and exemplify the points in your analysis, I will subtract points for poor grammar, lack of punctuation where required and needed, incomplete or wordy sentences, sentences with poor construction, spelling errors, and poor organization.
