Why Use MRP? (Continued)

Corning, Inc.

Before MRP, only 50 percent of its orders were being delivered on time

After MRP implementation, the company:

reduced inventory by approximately 10%

climbed inventory accuracy from 69 to 86 percent,

improved delivery schedules from 50 to 90 percent

SC Corporation, the world's largest producer of evaporative coolers

After two years of MRP implementation, inventory decreased so dramatically that plant could build the new line, doubled its production, and increased profit fivefold 

MRP was applied to plan the NASA's space shuttle missions

To handle the extensive resource demand of each launch, it had design a Flight Operations Planning Schedule (FOPS) which was exactly the same as MRP

MRP: Definition and Main Objectives

MRP is a computer based system that determines what final products the firm will make for future periods, and then it specifies production of needed inputs to make those products

The system identifies

Schedules of specific parts and materials and their amounts required to produce end items

Dates when orders for the materials should be released and received

MRP slogan

Getting the right materials in the right place at the right time

“Getting the right quantities at the wrong time does not accomplish anything”

Main objectives of MRP

Improve customer satisfaction

Reduce inventory investment

Improve plant operations efficiency

MDS/MPS schedule including quantity and dates of end items production (gross or net requirements)

Incorporates sales orders including their quantity and dates

Bills of Materials

Product structure including single-level and other model BOM

Supply Chain Bill/Assignment Set

Supply chain relationships including all suppliers, customers, and quantities transferred

Inventory Information

Item attributes including lead times, safety stocks, amount on hand, make/buy items, MRP planned, order quantities, scheduled receipts, order entry, etc.

Cost Information

Provide cost of resources (labor, materials, and capacity) used in MRP as well as the end product prices in order to identify the total cost and gross profit for each MRP schedule

 The MRP program operates in the following way:

Determines the number of end products and planned parts

Analyzes input files and determines the gross requirements of each item and its lead time 

Calculates the net requirements for each item using the gross requirements, amount on hand, safety stock:

After MRP calculates the net requirements, it develops planned order (planned order receipts) and planned order releases

Planned orders (planned-order receipts)

is the quantity of each material to be received in each time period of the planning horizon

Planned order releases

is the quantity of each item to be ordered in each time period of the planning horizon. This schedule is determined by offsetting the planned order receipts schedule to allow for lead times
