Anorexia nervosa is difficult to treat because of the shame, denial, and lack of insight with the disorder. Medical management should be directed toward correcting disease’s complications. Reestablishing normal eating patterns is crucial to restoring the patient’s health and mental stability (Bernstein, 2018). My subjective information would be how they viewed themselves such as if they are still too fat, ugly or other such negative viewpoints. I would ask them to tell me how they’re feeling including their mood to assess for depression and mood disorders. Are there any supportive family members that can be included in the treatment plan? What do they eat on a daily basis or have they ever made a food diary? Have the patient ever been in an inpatient psychiatric program or outpatient for help? Are they willing to get help or do I need to focus on just the treatment of the symptoms. Objective information would definitely be labs, many of the treatments are based on labs alone. Listening to the patient’s heart and an EKG for assessment of any arrhythmias possibly related to electrolyte imbalances. Looking at the teeth for damage from lack of nutrients that could possible cause an infection in the mouth. What is the patient’s BMI? If it is way too low they may need to be admitted to the hospital for immediate treatment. How much muscle wasting is noted on the patient? I would also ask if they take any medications to facilitate weight loss such as laxatives. Noting the demeanor of the patient would also help in the treatment.
