Use reverse chronological sequence (most recent first)

Education

Work experience

Activities

Other sections may include skills (computer), awards, honors

Resume Keys

Must be error-free

Well organized

Balanced with appropriate white space

May use either bulleted format or text based format

  • No personal pronouns (“I” or “me”)
  • Appropriate font size

12-pt. most readable

  • Use limited special effects – especially if it need to be scannable

Underlines, bold, italics

  • Consistency

Use consistent format for dates, bullets, and special effects

Use parallel phrasing

Include month/year

Use past tense as appropriate

Be consistent in format

  • Don’t include personal information

No hobbies, pictures, age, etc.

Resume Protocol

  • Include header on additional pages
  • Print on high quality bond or parchment paper

Neutral colors; black ink

  • Don’t staple
  • Use separate reference page

List references alphabetically

Take reference page to your interview

Scannable Resumes

  • Left justify every line
  • No columns, no indents
  • Use sans serif fonts only (Arial, Tahoma)
  • Use same font and font size
  • 12-pt. font recommended
  • Avoid all caps (can use for section headings)
