Module 13: End of Life Care: Part 1

This module focuses on care for the individual and family nearing the end of life. A brief history of end-of-life care and common end-of-life trajectories of illness are included. The significance of cultural and spiritual dimensions at the end-of-life are incorporated.

Module Objectives:

1) Describe how death and dying have changed over the last centuries.

2) Analyze the role of the nurse in end-of-life care.

3) Explore strategies for effective communication in end-of-life scenarios.

4) Explore common physical symptoms that may occur when caring for an individual nearing the end of life.

5) Appraise the significance of intimacy, cultural values, and spirituality in end-of-life situations.

Read the chapter in Nursing Care at the End of Life (by Lowey) or the chapter from Palliative Care Nursing: Quality Care at the End of Life (edited by Matzo & Sherman) that you signed up for earlier in the semester.

Graded Assignment:

End of Life Chapter summary and Dialog .  

Initial post - Summarize the chapter you chose earlier for your primary post for this assignment.  Respond to the prompts posted in the rubric (see Appendix F your syllabus). No references required for your initial post beyond the reference from the chapter you are addressing. Be sure to include citations as appropriate per APA style.

Note that six points are attached to 'Implications for Nursing Practice'.  In other words, how should the message of this chapter impact what nurses do? The following are possible ways to apply to nursing practice situations (you don't need to address them all as chapters are unique).

But think of things such as:

· The significance of the nurse's self-awareness as they work with individuals/families?

· What patient/family teaching might be helpful? How much should you teach?

· How might cultural differences be appreciated and respected?

· What might be a helpful way to respond to questions posed by the patient or family?

· How can the nurse most effectively approach physical pain?

· How can the nurse approach emotional distress?

· How might you approach ethical dilemmas?

· What can the nurse caring for dying individuals do to care for self? Why is that important?

· What can the nurse do to positively impact the grief experience for family?

· etc. etc.

Again, you  do not need to reply to all of these questions as the chapters cover a wide range of topics. These are ideas to help you get started.
