Colorado Firefighter Falls through the Roof FSE 223 EKU Colorado Firefighter Falls through the Roof Introduction Commercial fires and any other kind of accidental fires are dangerous to the life of people and especially to the fire-fighters. In the line of duty, faults and accidents can occur and may lead to the loss of lives. In the LODD reports, there are various incidences that have been covered, and they reveal the factors that led to the occurrence of LODD as well as recommendations on what should be done in such instances. This paper aims at summarizing the LODD incident, explaining the things that went wrong and discussing the factors that led to the LODD as well as the lessons learned from the incident.

Summary of the Incident In the NIOSH LODD Report, it involves the Colorado Firefighter who fell through the roof while checking for fire extension in the building. During the fire incident, the fighter was on Truck 8 which was the third truck dispatched by the company to the area of the incident.  1THE COMPANIES THAT ARRIVED FIRST FOUND THAT THE EXTERIOR DUMPSTER WAS ON FIRE AND IT WAS EXTENDING CLOSE TO FOUR FEET UP THE SHEET-METAL WALL.  The firefighters quickly dealt with the fire using a booster hose and the fire was out. The next step was to carry out interior search and finding the fire extension.  1 THE IC DIRECTED THE CREW IN TRUCK 8 TO THE ROOF SO THAT THEY COULD CHECK FOR EXTENSIONS.  THE CREW WAS ALSO REQUESTED TO SIZE UP THE APPROXIMATE DIMENSIONS OF THE BUILDING AND REPORT THE DIMENSIONS.  IN THE PROCESS OF REPORTING THE DIMENSIONS OF THE BUILDING TO THE INCIDENT COMMANDER, THE ENGINEER STEPPED ONTO A CORRUGATED ROOF PANEL THAT WAS TRANSLUCENT AND HAD CRACKS THAT COULD NOT SUPPORT HIS WEIGHT.  The illumination of the roof was not well distinguished, and therefore the engineer could not differentiate it from the rest of the roof.  1 AS A RESULT, THE ENGINEER FELL ON THE CONCRETE FLOOR WHICH WAS APPROXIMATELY 17 FEET BELOW.  He suffered vascular damage and multiple bone fractures which were detrimental to his health (Fire Rescue Magazine, 2017).

After the incident, the engineer was immediately transported to Hospital 1 which deals with trauma.  1 IN THE HOSPITAL, MULTIPLE SURGERIES WERE CARRIED OUT, AND ON 9TH JULY 2015, THE ENGINEER WAS DISCHARGED TO CONTINUE RECOVERING AT HOME.  Later in the month, he experienced sudden shortness of breath and was transported back to the hospital for more treatment. The cardiopulmonary arrest experienced was fatal, and efforts to resuscitate him were rendered unsuccessful. The engineer died in the long-run because the damages were too complicated. The LODD was not foreseen because there were various contributing factors that led to its occurrence.  1 THE FALL HAZARD THAT OCCURRED WAS UNRECOGNIZED BECAUSE THE CORRUGATED ROOF PANELS WERE TRANSLUCENT.  The low light condition that was evident on the roof also contributed to the accident (Fire Rescue Magazine, 2017).

1 FACTORS THAT LED TO THE LODD DURING THE INCIDENT, THE ENGINEER WAS DISTRACTED WHILE WALKING ON THE ROOF BECAUSE HE WAS TALKING ON THE RADIO.  THE ROOF CREW FAILED TO CONTINUOUSLY SOUND THE ROOF, AND THE DETECTION OF THE LOOSE POINT WAS NOT POSSIBLE.  Previous reports are also useful in learning and also acting as a guiding tool. There were no previous reports of such an incident and therefore it was difficult to detect and relate to such incidences.  1 IN THE INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODES, TRANSLUCENT ROOF PANELS DO NOT NEED SAME FALL RESISTANCE PANEL OR LOAD BEARING.  This factor contributed to this accident.  1 LASTLY, SCUTTLES, SKYLIGHTS AND TRANSLUCENT ROOF PANELS MAY NOT BE EASILY RECOGNIZED OR IDENTIFIED.  As a result, the engineer failed to recognize it and became a victim of the fault. All these factors were unfortunate, and they need to be analyzed and also applied in other similar incidences (Fire Rescue Magazine, 2017).

Lessons and Recommendations From the Colorado firefighter incident, there are various lessons to learn. First, the firefighter companies should be aware of the corrugated roof panels that are translucent and train the firefighters to detect them on their line of work. Secondly, the department should establish policies which ensure that firefighters follow all the safe operational practices including not walking on translucent roof panels and sounding the roof before walking through. There should also be enough ladders to be used in low light conditions and the use of protective equipment such as breathing apparatus. The third lesson is that firefighter should be trained more on situational awareness in all areas. Lastly, the fire departments should carry out pre-incident planning inspection regarding the building and also include such information in dispatch systems that are facilitated by computers so that statistics and strategies can be developed on safe fire grounds (Fire Rescue Magazine, 2017). Fire incidences need more precaution and absolute care, and therefore the fire departments should put more effort in creating effective strategies to deal with the incidences.
