Film Journal Writing Prompt #3

For the last few weeks we’ve been talking about the New Hollywood movement, also

known as the American New Wave, and the cultural and societal changes that allowed it

to take place. This period, spanning the mid-to-late 1960s until the late 1970s, saw

possibly the most radical change to mainstream American filmmaking in its history.

There are a great number of films from this movement that are still having a major impact

on today’s cinema and I feel that spending one or two weeks on it and seeing one or two

films from the movement isn’t enough to help you understand it to the fullest. Below is a

list of films from the movement. I want you to pick one that you haven’t seen before,

watch it, and write one and a half to two pages about the film and how it exemplifies the

qualities of this filmmaking movement. The response should also be in 12 pt font, double

spaced, and written like something you’d write for an English class.

Alien

American Graffiti

Annie Hall

Bonnie and Clyde

Carrie

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

The Deer Hunter

Dog Day Afternoon

The French Connection

The Godfather

Harold and Maude
