Assignment 2

Fall 2019

BUS 303 Assignment 2: Employment Package

Resume, Cover Letter, and Job Posting with Analysis This assignment will help you with tailoring career documents for your job search. It is worth 20% of your final grade, as outlined below.

Learning Goals 1. Learn to critically read job/internship descriptions and demonstrate a fit with a particular

position. 2. Learn to create an effective resume that is tailored to your career field and industry. 3. Learn to create an effective cover letter that is tailored to a specific position.

Deliverables 1. Resume (4%) 2. Cover letter (8%) 3. Peer Reviews (3%) 4. Job Posting with Analysis (5%)

Resume

Using the guidelines discussed in class and the materials posted on Blackboard, create/update your resume and tailor it to your target career field and industry.

Cover Letter

Write a cover letter targeted specifically for the job posting. Be sure to follow the guidelines discussed in class and in the materials posted on Blackboard.

Job Posting

Find an internship or job posting that is appropriate for your background and that would be of interest to you now and/or when you graduate. (Select only positions that require 0 – 3 years of experience unless you have additional experience.) The posting should be current, not something you applied for previously, and related to your major. How to find job postings:

• Search online career sites (Mason’s Handshake, CareerBuilder, LinkedIn, Indeed)

• Attend a career event on or off-campus

• Use your own network Important Reminder: Save the job posting in a Word document or as PDF for eventual submission. Do not simply rely on the URL, as positions are taken down from the Internet regularly.

Peer Reviews Guidelines for the peer reviews will be provided during class (see Course Schedule for timing). You

are expected to bring two hard copies of the job posting, and your resume and cover letter, to class the day of the peer review. Your peers will write their suggestions on these hard copies, and the marked-up hard copies will be submitted as part of the final employment package.

Assignment 2

Fall 2019

Analysis of Job Posting

The analysis should be one-page in length (single-spaced) and it should include both:

• An explanation of which portion(s) you addressed from the job posting and why. Think of this as a final and expanded Step 4 from the “Tailoring Your Experience to a Job Posting” activity.

• A discussion about the feedback you received during the peer reviews. What suggestions did you accept and why, and which did you decide not to accept and why? Make sure to address both the resume and cover letter peer reviews.

Evaluation Criteria A peer review of your resume and cover letter will be performed in class and used to update and finalize your documents. Critique forms that contain detailed evaluation criteria for this assignment will be posted on Blackboard. The final submission will be evaluated on your selection of an appropriate job posting, active participation in the peer review process, and the overall content and appearance of your résumé and cover letter documents. The analysis will be evaluated based on whether you addressed the questions above, and in how much detail. Please provide specific examples when answering these questions. Important Reminder: Assignment 2: Employment Package is an assessment of your original thinking and writing. If you view online examples for ideas, be sure that what you submit is your own, unique writing and that it’s tailored for this specific job. The Employment Package will go through SafeAssign. Submission Instructions On the peer review date (see schedule), please upload your draft versions (resume and cover letter) to Blackboard. You are also expected to bring two hard copies of the job posting, résumé, and cover letter to class. You will use these hard copies for a peer review. Failure to follow peer review procedures will result in a loss of participation points. On the assignment due date (see schedule), please:

2. Bring one hard copy of (all stapled together): a. your revised resume b. completed resume peer review forms c. draft versions of your resume with peer notes d. your revised cover letter e. completed cover letter peer review forms f. draft versions of your cover letter with peer notes g. your one-page analysis h. the job posting
