IT Development Adding 3 new file servers

By: Mario Jimenez

In this presentation we will…

Look at the project background.

Identify the project objectives and potential features.

Include a feasibility assessment.

Review solution alternatives.

List resource allocation.

Talk about the current status of the project.

Project background

Currently, all users on the internal network connect to a single file server to access documents.

Current problems:

Overgrowth of network computers and users.

Single-point of failure.

Slower file access times.

Project Background

How to correct problems:

There will be a need for additional server machines to prevent a single-point of failure, as well as catering to the overgrowth of the users and computer clients.

Adding more available processing power and disk space to the internal network will help with slow file access times.

The solution needed and requested will be to add 3 new file servers to the internal network.

Project objectives

Obtain information regarding needed resources.

Gather actual hardware and software necessary for project.

Begin installation of server software:

RAID configuration

Windows Server 2016 and file storage services

Begin installation of hardware at locations.

Configure and implement network changes for network file storage.

Potential features

Windows Server 2016.

Local file storage at some remote locations.

More uptime for file access and usage.

Distributed work load between the file servers.

Faster access and storage time.

Feasibility assessment

Possible solutions for better file storage experience:

Assigned USB Drives

Google Drive

Localized file servers

Using localized computer storage.

Feasibility Assessment

File access and storage has currently been very unstable in terms of downtime and uptime.

The best option would be localized file servers due to their convenience, management, and security.

If the Internet goes down, documents will still be available on the internal network.

Because files are stored locally, they can be monitored and secure internally.

If a single user computer were to stop functioning, all files will still be available on the file servers themselves.

Solution Alternatives

Alternative 1 – Basic file storage services.

Only for file storage.

Access files from any part of the internal network.

Windows Server 2016

File Server Role on the servers.

Solution Alternatives

Alternative 2 – File storage, DNS, and DHCP services.

For file storage.

DHCP and DNS services for Internet access.

Access files from any part of the internal network.

Windows Server 2016

File, DHCP, and DNS Server Role on the servers.

Solution Alternatives

Alternative 3 – File storage, DNS, DHCP, Print, and Active Directory Domain Controller services.

For file storage.

DHCP and DNS services for Internet access.

Print Management and Domain Controller.

Access files from any part of the internal network and some remote locations.

Windows Server 2016

File, DHCP, DNS, Print, and ADDC Server Role on the servers.

Local user profiles on server

Resource Allocation

Hardware:

File server machines

USB Drive

Monitors, keyboards, mice, power cables, Ethernet cables.

Power tools

Mounting hardware

UPSs (May be added at a later date).

Resource Allocation

Software:

Windows Server 2016

File Server Role

Remote Desktop Services

Current status

Documentation of resources and project requirements have been finalized.

Currently the process of gathering and/or purchasing resources for use.

Will soon begin the process of configuring the required hardware, such as the RAID setup for hard drives, and then installing the necessary software like Windows Server 2016.
