While I was consulting at Lucent Technologies, The Rhein River overflowed its banks big time.  Dusseldorf's city center was underwater.  All of the Telecommunications equipment was underwater and completely useless.  And it was all Lucent provided.  We got the call even before the river crested.  Working manufacturing 24 hours straight, the materials to completely rebuild was ready for shipment.  The planes left Boston for Munich 8 hours later.  All of the material was in trailers in Dusseldorf before the water was down enough so Lucent engineers could work.

Lucent had just one super large network.  Those of us back in the US were in constant contact with the engineers while they were sending the technical information.  Once we knew what they needed and more importantly what should be on the 1st plane and so on.  This was so they could put the material in the trailers in the proper sequence as the materials were needed.  It worked out perfectly.  Dusseldorf was up and running, phone and network wise before any other city on the river.

The hourly folks worked tons of overtime, so they were very happy with their paycheck.  Several of us who were consultants were also happy.  But the professional staff got a thank you note and a Lucent Europe shirt.

Please give an example on how IT helped an organization meet their goals.
