Annotated Bibliography
Overview
So far in this course, we have used the word “annotation” to refer to writing on and interacting with a text as we read in order better to comprehend and recall the information within it. An “annotated bibliography,” on the other hand, is something a little bit different. Depending on the purpose of your bibliography, some annotations may summarize, some may assess or evaluate a source, and some may reflect on the source’s possible uses for the project at hand. Some annotations may address all three of these steps. We will be doing all three for our Library Project Work.
You have already written a brief reflection on your sources’ applicability to your own research in your Viable and Credible Sources assignment. Now, you will select FOUR sources that you find particularly useful and do a full, three-paragraph annotation of each of them, including a summary, an evaluation of the text, and a reflection on how each source may be useful in your research. These paragraphs can be brief, but they need to address all aspects separately: summary, evaluation, and reflection.
Format
Please keep in mind:
· All your text, including the write-up beneath the citation, must be indented so that the author's last name is the only text that is flush left.
· The entire text should be double-spaced, including the annotation.
· Your four sources should appear in alphabetical order.
· Your heading (including your name, the course, the project, and the due date) needs to be typed and appear in an upper corner of the paper.
· Instead of “Works Cited” or “Source Justification,” this stage of the project should have the title “Annotated Bibliography” at the top.
This handout is adapted from the Purdue Owl.

In the sample annotation below, the writer includes three paragraphs: a summary, an evaluation of the text, and a reflection on its applicability to his/her own research, respectively.
Sample MLA Annotation
Eerola, Tuomas, et al. "An integrative review of the enjoyment of sadness associated with music." Physics of Life Reviews, vol. 25, 2018, p. 100. Academic OneFile, https://link.galegroup.com/ apps/doc/A549543927/AONE?u=pcc&sid=AONE&xid=2da86bb0. Accessed 12 Feb. 2019.
The main point of this research is to review and rearrange prior theories about enjoyment of sad music. Based on former theories, the authors developed a framework and assess the phenomenon in biological, psycho-social, and cultural factors. They divided these factors into three levels which are individual, interpersonal and collective. Although there is some limited understanding in biological and psycho-social aspects, the research is well-designed and can be useful for future investigation.
This article was published last year in Physics of Life Reviews, which is a reliable journal. The publisher is Elservier, which was established in 1880 and is “one of the world's major providers of scientific, technical, and medical information”. Most of the authors of this article are working at university level and already have had many academic articles published. The article has very clear objects and citations. The evidence showed in the text are valuable and positive. There is no advertisement and the research is mostly for academic purpose.
This is definitely an academic article writing in research format. It is a long and dense of jargon. At first, looking at the topic made me believe that this research will explain further the mechanism of emotion relating to music reaction, but it turned out that this research focused more on analyzing and reviewing prior theories about the “paradoxical pleasure produced by sad music”. To simplify, I’m not sure if this article can relate or give me a good idea for my topic question, since I want to find out “how strong” and this article just answer the part “how” or “why”.
