3.5 Discussion Cross-Cultural Communication

Getting Started

In LDR-385 you reviewed  Hofstede's Six Dimensions of Culture (new tab)  and used the  Country Comparison (new tab)  tool to help you identify how individuals from different countries think about the world around them. In this discussion, we are going to take that a step further and discuss how these cultural differences impact our communication.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

· Examine different communication elements as influenced by culture.

Background Information

Begin the assignment by watching “Secrets of cross-cultural communication.” This video provides a brief understanding of why considering culture when communicating is so important. Next, read the article "The Ultimate Guide to Cross-Cultural Communication at Work Review." The article reviews a variety of components that go into cross-cultural communication, including personal communication style which we looked at last week. There are some examples of cross-cultural communication gone wrong as some suggestions for how to improve cross-cultural communication. Lastly, read the article "Global Communication and Cross-Cultural Competence: Twenty-First Century Micro-Case Studies." This article includes seven case studies that can help illuminate cross-cultural communication. The article also includes some further research that can assist you as you seek to become better at cross-cultural communication.
