If four words describe the current working environment in the contemporary world, they would be volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. The world is constantly changing, making it increasingly difficult to predict or control. A good example is the emergence of the Coronavirus pandemic, which no one was prepared for or had anticipated. This event led to the shutdown of several countries and the death of millions of people globally. This proves the importance of learning to lead in a VUCA world.

One concern from living in a VUCA world is how to lead properly. Leadership, in a broad sense, means governing yourself and others. One of the aspects that are seldom looked at is the leadership of self and its impact on the leadership of others. A VUCA world greatly impacts an individual (Casey, 2020). Over the years, the brain has grown to embrace control and abhor constant change. This control and predictability have helped human civilization adapt and survive. However, this has now changed. In a VUCA world void of certainty and control, it can be hard for the brain to adjust, hurting an individual's ability to adequately cope. This is perhaps one of the reasons why mental health issues have been on the rise (Casey, 2020).

This begs the question: how do we lead ourselves better in a VUCA world? What is the best strategy to employ with regard to leading ourselves? How can we take care of ourselves in a constantly changing world? I believe that this is a good question to start on before initiating a discussion on how to lead others properly.
