I. Executive Summary

A. Proposed Project

The organization in this proposal is Wichita State University. WSU is a NCAA Division I

athletic program with eight sports that does not include football. WSU was previously a member

of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) and changed to the American Athletic Conference

(AAC) in 2017 (AP, 2017). The intended out come is to pick one of the Power Five conferences

to join. The two realistic conferences for WSU to move to the Power Five would be Big 12 or

Pac-12. The Big 12 would be a more favorable member because they do not have as many

members and the travel expense would appear to be less.

B. Revenue Generators and Expenses.

The most significant revenue was men’s basketball. According to the 2018-2019 EADA

report, men’s basketball brought in over $8 million. The biggest expenses were the total expense

for athletic aid for men and women was over $3.8 million. The biggest expense in the operating

budget was men’s basketball game day expenses at over $1.8 million. The revenue and expenses

balanced out except for the “Not Allocated by Gender/Sport” section, this was the only

section where the revenue was greater (EADA, 2019). This is where the athletic department was

able to show a small profit.

C. Financial Health

In 2018-19 academic year the athletic department at Wichita State University showed a

profit of $79, 625 after all revenues and expenses were calculated (EADA, 2019). The men’s

basketball team brings in the largest amount of revenue but also has an equal amount of expenses

since the university does not have football. “Wichita State has been to six straight NCAA

Tournaments and reached the Final Four in 2013” (AP, 2017). The university has double the size

of their campus in the last four years with anticipation of increased enrollment (WSU, 2020).

The continued growth of the athletic programs and the growth of the university puts WSU in a

healthy financial position.
