Platform begets user experience

As you may have noticed, the platform you choose influences the experience had by your audience

One must choose their platforms wisely

How-to (insert chosen platform)

Create a how-to (insert chosen platform) on something you feel knowledgeable about and you think others could benefit from learning about too

Your topic can be on anything of your choosing that would be appropriate to share within our class setting

For example: coding, sports, cooking, cleaning, etc

Supplementary rationale/explanation paper

Challenge yourself to be creative and not look like all other how-to (insert chosen platform) style content.

How can you think outside the box to craft a unique, positive experience for your audience?

I’m betting you’re quite familiar and have seen many how-to style informational guides/videos/etc…

What did those do well?

What did they do poorly?

How can you learn from what they did?

Requirements: how-to (insert platform)

You must include 2 or more types of media in your how-to assignment

For example: video and voice over

All forms of media must be generated by you (aka, self created)

I.e., the video is filmed and edited by you, use of your own photos, you do the voice over, etc

Project length:

Video:

Minimum of 2 minutes; maximum of 5 minutes

Pictorial/text – based:

1 nice poster sized project or 3-5 smaller pages that are well-laid out

USE YOUR BEST JUDGEMENT. If you don’t feel it’s very robust, add more meaningful content to it.

Requirements: Rationale/explanation paper

300 – 600 words

Address the following:

What is your topic? Why did you pick the topic you chose? Why is it a passion of yours that you felt others should know more about?

Why did you pick the overall platform you chose? Where would you envision your target audience would see/experience it?

Why did you pick the combination of media you chose to incorporate? Be specific on your reasons why.

How effective did you feel your end product was at teaching someone something about your topic space? Thoroughly and thoughtfully explain this answer.

Purpose/goal of assignment:

Media tools:

Practice using a variety of media tools

You may or may not be using these tools as a part of your individual project

Allows you to familiarize yourself slightly more with other forms of media

Gives you a reason to learn other forms of media

Entry level media tools are OKAY to use for this project – like iMovie, for example

Role of experience:

Think about how important a person’s experience is with something

If you’re introducing someone to something you’re passionate about and it’s brand new to them, you want that initial experience to be highly positive. Or if it’s something they have experienced before and disliked, how can you make it a better re-exposure?

Craft your assignment so that happens

Think about your target user group/audience

Due date and turn in

Both components are due: Tuesday, March 20 at 9:30am (Tuesday after spring break)

I don’t recommend waiting until coming back from spring break to complete this assignment. It’s being assigned on the 1st and due on the 20th; that is a long time to work on it so utilize the time wisely.

Turn in via Canvas under your respective Canvas lab section

Grading:

How to (insert platform)

Perceived effort: 5 points

Followed instructions: 5 points

Timeliness: (only docked for late work)

Rationale/explanation paper

Perceived effort: 5 points

Followed instructions: 5 points

Timeliness: (only docked for late work)

Total points for overall project: 20 points

In class today:

Brainstorm ideas

If you have an idea you want to proceed ahead with, start generating:

Goals

Outlines

Storyboard out your idea

Research what’s already been done out there in your topic space and/or chosen overall platform

Talk it out with someone near you to work out fuzzy parts of your idea

I highly encourage you to challenge yourself with this assignment. Don’t do what is easiest simply because it’s easy. Use this opportunity to learn an entry-level tool. You could potentially utilize this assignment as a mini stepping stone toward familiarizing yourself with tools you will be using for your individual project – like a practice tutorial.
