In the student paper, "Dear Boss," a student is working part-time as a corporate auditor, and writing to their boss in order to lessen her work load. Using the Rogerian strategy, she attempts to change her boss's mind. I find the Rogerian strategy is effectively used in her letter. In the introductory paragraph of the paper, the author makes the issue very clear- her surplus of free time which resulted in a heavier workload. She then goes on to show a deep understanding for the boss's position toward her issue in the first place. The author's work ethic is very efficient; therefore, the boss continuously places a large responsibility on her. She also details how busy her school life is which could possibly create a common ground for her boss, as they also likely struggled with a busy educational and work life. The author then justifies her argument by stating it would be beneficial for the other employees to work more, as they could ultimately gain more experience and be more efficient. The author then concludes by reintroducing the two positions of the argument. Overall, the use of the Rogerian strategy was used effectively, and the author was able to create a powerful argument.

The author uses the Rogerian strategy effectively because after introducing the issue, she fully demonstrates an understanding of her bosses position and that of the importance of doing what is best for the company. She then explains her concern that having too heavy a workload will negatively impact her ability to do her best in school. She finally goes on to extend compromise ideas where she will oversee the employees carrying out work the boss wanted her to do all the while maintaining her part-time workload. The result will be a better-qualified workforce and again shows the authors concern for the company. The overall impression she presents is understanding the needs of the business and having empathy for her boss while expressing her concerns, and then offering a compromise by presenting a plan that is of benefit to her and the employer.
